it means if you have better stats by far than everyone else in your school, you have a good chance anyways. In fact, the ivy league school might appreciate having a new school applicant.
My school doesn't send many kids to ivies (maybe 2 or 3 a year) because we send so many to UC Berkeley, LA, and such. maybe it just means a lot of people at your school are smart but just sought other opportunities closer to home

your school history means nothing compared to YOUR history. heck i'm homeschooled how do you think i feel i dont even have a school history.

I disagree with the above posters, somewhat. But first,

what does that trend mean...?

(i wanna go to upenn (ivy))

There is no trend. Your school does not send ppl to the schools you want, I guess.

The fact that they don't get in should tell you something. Do they apply? If not, why not? If they apply and get rejected, then the academics are not good enough. So what?

Have you considered really top colleges other that one? Start now. There are 100 colleges you'd be lucky to go to.

"your school history means nothing compared to YOUR history. heck i'm homeschooled how do you think i feel i dont even have a school history."

Now that is a dumbass remark, because it certainly matters about your own school and who is applying to a college and they will certainly compare you. Much documentation exists on this. Since you are homeschool you will not have to deal with this, but it is different situation for prep school and public school kids who will be selected among their peers.

Your are fortunate not to have to be compared on a school and peer basis.

your school history means little compared to what YOU did. obviously if more people went to ivies that might make your school look better but i do not believe that you'll have trouble if you look impressive. you wont be rejected due to school history.

as for the homeschool thing that was just a joke.

"Only 1 person has EVER attended an ivy , at my school, 60 years of history!

what does that trend mean...?"

That trend means that there are many wise people there who do not like to waste their money on the Ivy money machines, one can learn everything in public scools too if he really wants. Calculus is calculus at UCI and at Penn too, if you learn it, you will know it. It worth to go to Ivy if it pays you and not more expensive for you than the public is. ivy is just a bussiness like collegeboard.

Yeah, why bother even going to school?

Heck, theoretically, you can go to some desolate island with a bunch of books, bunsen burners and slide rulers and learn it all yourself.

I guess if you see no value in things like: being in a diverse, challenging environment surrounded by top quality students from around the world, professors who are amongst the brightest in academe teaching courses in departments that are nationally ranked, having access to world class facilities / libraries and walking away with a degree from one of the finest institutions in the world (not to mention a tremendous experience and education)... yeah, the Ivies are definitely not for you.

But hey, but don't take it from me, I'm one of those "unwise" people who has not one but two Ivy degrees... (although I should say that I've been very successful in my career, but that must be some strange coincidence)

now, now, parents, let's talk nice to the kids here. Einsteingermany, don't take that personally :)

Chanman, have you talked to your GC. Some schools do not have the best GC departments, and students are often not 'guided'. OTOH, some areas just tend to have kids that like to go close to home, in spite of good guidance. Even if your school has only sent 1 kid to an Ivy League school, that's okay. If you are an outstanding student, then your school history may not be relevant. What are your stats and GPA?
Remember too, that IVY is an athletic grouping, of undoubtedly good schools. But by no means do they have exclusivity on a great education. There are dozens of schools that are equally competitive and selective, some even more so, depending on the specific program.

The Ivy League is an athletic conference. Its member schools are Brown, Cornell, Columbia, Dartmouth, Harvard, Penn, Princeton, and Yale.

"Only 1 person has EVER attended an ivy , at my school, 60 years of history!

what does that trend mean...?"

It means nothing.

Assuming to have good recs and essays.

my guidance counselor is NEW. He's just graduated from st. louis university. New GC. Young. He seems "good", but i've only talked to him about common sense stuff.

as far as guidance..i'm relying on all of you, CC people lol!

can someone tell me my strengths and weaknesses please

(i feel like this is getting to the "What are my chances" topics), but i'm just wondering whlie we're at it.

Hopefully you are a junior and have some time. You need to assess your counselor situation, they need to understand ED EA ect and what a profile application is (if financial aid is going to be a consideration)

Being from a school that has had numerous successful previous students at a particular school has its advantages, so does coming from a geographically unique situation. You may require some additional help with getting letters of rec that will support you, and you will need to monitor deadlines to make sure they are met.

In some public schools, the guidance office helps people select which state or community college to attend and have no expertise in tougher schools. A college called my daughters high school and the counselor there was not prepared to talk about her as a student, although he knows her well as a community leader, I think he lost a chance for a sale, but hopefully he did no harm. I suggested my daughter call the school to answer their questions.

Does your school offer challenging classes and how are you doing with them is an important consideration. If your school offerring is slim, consider taking a college class over the summer. Good luck.

my school is top 10 in the state.

offers 15 or so AP Classes
i've taken almost all of them.

":but hey, but don't take it from me, I'm one of those "unwise" people who has not one but two Ivy degrees... (although I should say that I've been very successful in my career, but that must be some strange coincidence)"

does not matter where did you take the calculus. what matters is you know it or you do not know it. I took it at UCI, still in HS, cost was $350. ivys better though if you get scholaship or you are rich. i'am not.

Don't you love it when students are in the top 2%, great stats, and then look for reassurance. You could apply just about anywhere if you keep up the grades and e/c's.

You school is the top 10 in MO, and you have taken almost 15 AP's; sounds odd that 1 student has gone to an IVY school in 60 years. Do a lot go to WUSTL, Chicago, Wisconsin, NWU, etc.that are great "local" schools? Anyway, it looks like you are on the right track for success.

yes.
university of chicago, WUSTL (many), umm, UCLA one or two, MANY public schools.
vale dict went to washu last year

only 1 person went to ivy-upenn-where i wanna go.

Get a copy of your schools profile (which they send out to the college) as it has a wealth of information: average SAT score, percentage of students who graduate, 5age who attend 2 and 4 year schools, the schools that they are most likely to attend.

Is your school a small school? Do a lot of colleges come to your school to visit? Guidance counselors usually invite the ususal uspects depending on where the kids decide to attend. It is not unusual for kids to go to school close to home.

You have been given some very feasible answers, maybe students haven't been applying to these schools. It was certainly the case at my daughter's high school which has a track record of sending kids to LAC's (because they are a small high school, and the guidance counselor is very well versed in LACs). They send a few students to Cornell, Penn and Columbia because they are close by. Last year kids decided to spread their wings and for the first time in the 10 year history of the h.s. applied to Williams, Amherst, Dartmouth, Stanford, Wash U and Brown. Guess what, they got accepted. It has to start with someone, it might as well begin with you.

i'll get the profile and check

and no, not really a small school (class of 350)

but, NO Good colleges come to high school to visit
NONE!!

maybe tier 3, tier 2 at the BEST
