10/12 SAT I Essay

I thought this was scored out of 6?

Anyway, this is what I got. First time taking it.

How did I do?

Is this good? Bad? What?

Good. It’s graded out of 6 but two readers grade it, combining for a score out of 12. So both readers gave you a 5/6 which is pretty good.

What did I do to not deserve those two points for a perfect score?

Does having a high score like this on the essay even matter?

I got a 10 as well, and it was a half-assed attempt at an essay. No big words, no transitions, just a paper with 3 generic examples.

I read that as long as you fill up the two pages you are almost guaranteed a 10, and on the test day I just rambled off some explanations to fill up the space and got the score.

The score is not bad by an means. For the next test just memorize a few universal, albeit obscure (to the average grader) examples and prove your point and I’m pretty sure you are set for a 12.

I got an 11, it’s annoying one reader thought mine was a 6 and the other thought it was a 5… Shoulda gotten a 12 :p

I filled both of the pages and I though I wrote a pretty good essay but I got a 9. Moral of the story: try to use historical examples instead of personal anecdotes, particularly if the latter are made up.

waht’s the key to a high essay score??

^ Most importantly fill up the two pages
Secondly use legit examples that tie into the prompt

I sucked up the questions (60/80) but got a 12 , so I’m happy :)

kenson what was your overall writing score?

Yeah, I got an 11 too, it sucks.

I got a 12 with ease…

my only advice is use good examples from literature.
the three examples that I used were

1)Hedda Gabler by Henrik Ibsen
2)Antigone by Sophocles
3)Oedipus Rex by Sophocles

What I did before the test was compile about 10 examples and memorize them.

That’ll for sure get you a 12.

I got a 10 too and I got a 2400…if you are retaking and want to improve your writing section, definitely focus on grammar rules. The writing section is extremely predictable; there’s always a question about parallelism, always one about singular or plural subjects, etc. It’s much easier, I think, to raise your score that way than trying to squeeze out those last two points on the essay.

anecdote time: A friend of mine, one of the best writers I know and someone who is planning to go on and major in English, got a 7 on the essay. I’ve seen examples posted on here that even the writer admitted are terrible, and they still got 12s.

In conclusion: the essay is stupid, a ten is good, don’t worry about it.

One Sad Korean can I see one of your essays when it comes out as I’m having trouble getting any higher than a 9 on my essay (It’s what I got both times), even though I thought my second essay was better than my first.
