I am the founder (and CEO) of a sport company that has generated $100,000 of revenue.
Additionally:
-Got a patent (not patent pending, real awarded patent) for the product
-Applying for 2 more patents, most likely will get
-Will generate more revenue by senior year (I am a sophomore right now)
-Sold on Amazon, eBay, and own Website
I am passionate about entrepreneurship and also computer science.
Is this considered a good extracurricular for the top schools (Stanford, etc.)? Just wondering.
This is my GPA:
4.0 unweighted, 4.5 weighted
Rigorous Courseload
I think it’d be a major plus for him especially with his stats. I seriously don’t believe you’d be shut out if you applied to these schools which says a lot as I always say that these schools are reaches for all. I think if you apply to Wharton, I would be surprised to see you rejected assuming recs and essays are on par. The only downside I can see of this situation is your financial aid which asks for your assets and income which will count against you when schools determine your aid. Besides that, I would wish you luck but doesn’t sound like you’ll need it with amazing grades, assumed scores, and that incredible professional success.
If the OP’s SAT I scores are >2300, he will be quite competitive for highly- and most-selective institutions (presuming his essays and recommendations do not convey anything derogatory). However, the OP needs to understand clearly that “application fundamentals” (e.g., GPA, curricular rigor, standardized test results, and so forth) MUST be entirely competitive first, before his entrepreneurial successes can become “acceptance decisive.” In essence, there is no substitute for outstanding “application fundamentals” (although it appears the OP is not wanting there).
The EC you described is extremely strong, and would be considered a plus at any school. If you are very devoted to entrepreneurship, an app to Babson may be a good idea, they are incredibly focused on business and entrepreneurship.
Thanks for the helpful information. Hopefully during Junior Year, I will maintain all A’s and I will work hard during this summer to achieve a high SAT score.
Strongly disagree. Combined with the patent, it’s a measurable accomplishment, as opposed to a traditional leadership position like being president of the future business leaders organization or computer club which, as anyone who attended high school knows, is so often devoid of any substance and achieved through a popularity contest.
OP, your business will be a real plus on your application, distinguishing you from many other applicants, and your journey through entrepreneurship could be good fodder for an essay. Good luck to you.
“$100,000 isn’t much if you filed 3 patent applications and need to maintain the patents.”
Not true for me. Patents are only expensive if you hire a patent attorney who usually cost $5000 to $15000. However, I didn’t hire one because I created the application myself. There are some filing fees and maintenance fees (after 3 years) but they aren’t too much.
Also I was thinking about starting a club in my school but I don’t know if I should start the Future Business leaders of America (we don’t have one), or just Entrepreneurship club. Thanks.
@NavalTradition You mean founding and running a company isn’t a sign of leadership and initiative?
@billcsho I’m not really sure what you expect of a high schooler. He’s not going to be running a conglomerate as a sophomore. Any top school will surely appreciate his efforts and success thus far and view it as an indicator of greater things to come.
@billcsho Perhaps I misinterpreted your post. I thought that you were indicating that OP’s accomplishment wasn’t impressive because his business wasn’t making enough money. If that’s not what you meant, I apologize for and withdraw my comment.
