Does anyone know how critical our 2009 1040 is to the schools in making their financial aid offers and if an offer is made, can it be adjusted? We typically don't have our taxes done until after April 15th.

One school I spoke to last month said that if you do not submit a final 1040 with your Financial Aid application then the award will be granted as “tentative” until the 1040’s are submitted. At that time, award is confirmed/adjusted/discussed and the official FA award is granted. It sounded to me as though unless there was some huge disparity between your estimate and actual numbers, the aid would remain in line with the “tentative” grant.

I think they’d at least want to see your W2’s or other forms to verify your income. No?

The schools we applied to said 100% they had to have your W-2’s (unless self-employed).
One said they would make a tentative offer, the others said they needed to be in. To be fair, I didn’t ask because I knew ours were a few days away (Feb 5 or something). Personally, when we started in indep schools, the april 15 deadline no longer applied - it’s now Feb 15 and we deal with it.

Thanks all. I just spoke with 2 of the schools and they said the same thing you mentioned and that is that a “tentative” award will be granted until all our paperwork is completed and then a final award is granted at that time.

Thanks again, hoping to hear good news tomorrow!
