I have been holding off submitting the Profile to Feb 15 deadline schools, hoping the last of my tax documents will arrive and I can supply actual, versus estimated, numbers. Does this make sense or should I submit estimated and then fax/mail the actual once taxes are final?

I submitted the Profile for my D on January 5 using estimated numbers (had my accountant run a draft version of our taxes using numbers from our last pay stubs of 2010). Did the same with FAFSA. Will go back and amend the FAFSA as soon as our final taxes are done. And will contact Profile schools individually, if there is a big difference in the estimated and real numbers. The Profile clearly asks for estimated numbers from 2010 using numbers from 2009.

so, if the Profile estimates are close, you don’t have to contact the schools and send corrections? (How do you know how close is good enough?) I did submit both the FAFSA and Profile with what should be very close estimates, last week. I assumed I would have to update both when I file my taxes and get the exact numbers. It would be great if I just have to go in and electronically update FAFSA since that’s easier :)

I agree that it would be so much easier to just go back and change the Profile like the FAFSA. My D applied EA to Northeastern and I submitted the Profile way early–November–before I really knew what I was doing. After she was accepted, I realized I had made many mistakes. I just emailed the corrections to NEU and their fin aid officer made the changes. Now I have submitted the FAFSA (with estimates). I emailed them asking about any possible changes in their tentative award. They told me that unless there were drastic differences in the real numbers that the award wouldn’t change. Other colleges D applied to have told me that they use the Profile and FAFSA “as is” to make tentative awards, then when they receive copies of our filed 2010 taxes, they finalize it.
