10th grade Hotchkiss very low admit this year

I just had my HK interview with the dean of admissions, and when I asked about how many new 10th graders they are accepting, he said only 14. 7 boys, 7 girls, and alluded that some will be athletes. He also said they are getting many more applications this year than normal. I’m sure some people already knew this, but I just want to pass the information along. I knew that they don’t accept many students as is, but 14 seems extremely low nonetheless. I’m not entirely sure what to make of this. He suggested the possibility of applying as a repeat ninth grader, but for many reasons I’ve already decided against that. The reason he gave for the lower numbers this year is that they apparently over-enrolled last year, and therefore don’t have as many spaces available as usual to grow the class.

I’m not too surprised actually, that does seem a bit low though.

Also, does anyone know if it is this low at other schools?

I asked about this at my Hotchkiss interview and I think it might just be Hotchkiss because my interviewer told me that Hotchkiss overenrolled last year and now has a larger class.

I think most schools are seeing that there are much more applicants this year. Due to COVID and being virtual, most likely?

We were told the same thing for Deerfield.
I’m fairly sure it was for current 9th graders (graduating class of 2024), so fewer 10th graders will be admitted during this admission season. We were not given any actual numbers.

I was told 40 spots - not 14.

I just saw that NMH has 1200-1500 applicants this year. This seems really, really high.
