Hi Guys!
I am having a few concerns with my 12th grade schedule. I was wondering what other people would recommend taking.
These are the classes I am taking for sure:
-AP English Lit
-AP Calc AB
-Adv Study Math
-Dual Enrollment Bio 189 (Medical Biology/School doesn’t offer AP Bio)
-AP Gov
-2 Open Periods
And I am debating to take either
-AP Art History
or
-AP Chemistry Online
I only want to take one of the courses above since they are both challenging classes. AP Art History is notoriously hard at my school while ap chemistry is ap chemistry.
Have you taken a chemistry course before? How did you do on it? Like you said, AP Chem is notoriously hard, so if you didn’t do very well in the high school version, it’s probably not a good idea to take it, especially since you’re doing it online. Also, have you taken a physics course? It’s generally recommended to take a high school course in all three sciences and then an AP.
I don’t know much about AP Art History, but since you’re aleady taking a science course senior year, I don’t think it really matters which one you take, so take whichever one you’re more interested in.
Well my high school has program areas pertaining to certain fields. I’m in the medical program thus they don’t really encourage me to take physics and require me to take anatomy and sciences like that. Would you still recommend me to take it, say AP physics or Physics H?
As for AP chemistry, I did relatively decent in chemistry when I was in 10th grade. It wasn’t my favorite class however so I think I’m going to stray away from that option. Thanks for your opinion!
Regardless of what your high school wants, as long as you graduate, it is MORE important to take the classes that your target colleges want.
You should definitely take a physics class (whether H or AP physics 1) if you are planning to apply to USC and other schools in that range.Having taken all three of the big sciences is much more important to college admissions than taking yet another AP in a science you took before, and LIGHT YEARS more important than taking medical science classes such as anatomy. High school is not the time to specialize, but the time to get a broad, well-rounded education. IMO, medical-related high school classes are more appropriate for those students geared toward doing something like a two-year pre-professional course in a med tech sort of field, not so much for students who are headed to four-year colleges and possibly med school/grad school. If you like it and can fit it in to continue the medical program, fine, but don’forget the basics that colleges want to see. Have you also taken a world history or a European history class too? Gov is important, but having taken world or Euro, even more so.
Also, foreign language is very important. Selective schools will definitely want to see you take a minimum of three years and four is better. So sign up for that summer class and consider taking Spanish 4 next year instead of AP art. Knowing Spanish could be very beneficial for a psychologist, psychiatrist or any MD in our multicultural world. You will certainly have FL requirement in college and you will more likely be able to skip through the first, basic college Spanish semesters if you don’t have a year in high school with no Spanish in which you can forget your skills.
