1490 Sat...help Please!

Wow...I thought I would do alright. It was the first time I took the test, but here's what I got:

Math- 450
Critical Reading- 420
Writing- 620

870/1490

This is terrible. I want to go to Wake Forest and all it says on there is that "the middle 50% of admitted students got 1280-1400" That's just Math/CR. I need to get my score a lot better obviously but how do i start?

Just study a lot. Buy Barron's study books and the Blue Collegeboard Book and work through them like mad. Also for CR try reading lots of classics, and the newspaper (NYT, Washington Post, Economist, etc). For Math it's just a matter of learning the concepts and then applying. If you haven't already learned enough math to do well, you might need to self-teach from the prep boks. Good luck!

personally, i hate the collegeboard book. i use it only for the practice test but try the princeton review one as well

you should either take an SAT prep course or get a tutor. i did a prep course last summer and it brought my scores up by a lot. they're expensive but effective.

Could I realistically go from a 1490 to an 1800?

I think it's possible. You must practice though. Knowing basic algebra should yield at least a 600 on the Math Section. For the CR, I suggest memorizing the most common SAT words. Practice Reading prompts. Get a feel for the questions. It all becomes repetitive after a while.

oh def, it depends how motivated you are tho

How much would I have to study to improve my scores a lot?

And does anyone have AIM? I feel more comfortable talking live and it would be easier for me since I have so many questions.

You can definitely raise your score 30 points. Just practice a lot. I know it sounds obvious, but that's really the best way to do it.

I'd say do 10-15 practice tests over the summer, and review all of your answers, figure out what you got wrong, etc. Set small goals in between tests, say, improve 10 points on each section every test you take.

This is by no means easy work, but a 400 point jump, while definitely possible, can't be achieved by slacking. Best of luck to you!

sorry, that's supposed to be 300 points, not 30

Well, back in 9th grade I was a rebel and I stole an Algebra 1 book. it's sitting here. Would it help at all?

No, studying from a math book will not help, it will hurt your math score. Try studying for math out of a history book, that should help.

I love you, Jlime.

No need to be a wise-ass about it. I'm sure if I studied Math 6/5 it wouldn't help. Go put that in your pipe and smoke it.
