16 or 18 Credits for a GLS freshman

Hi all,

I'm an incoming freshman at NYU and part of the Global Liberal Studies Program. I really want to utilize all of the credit hours that my family is paying for (since tuition covers up to 18) and so with my current courseload of 16 credits I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on taking an additional class that is 2 credits.

So here is the scenario:

MoWe: Writing I w/ Rectenwald
MoWe: Social Foundations I w/ White

TuTh: Cultural Foundations w/ McCannon
TuTh: East Asian Cultures w/ Chang

The 2 credit class would be below:

RUSSN-UA 9260 The Czech Republic in a Global Context
This course is intended as an introduction to central themes in the history and culture of the Czech Republic and Central Europe—the intersection of many international influences--in the context of globalization. Conversely, the course also discusses globalization in the local context. An important dimension of the class is a discussion about how international students should use their experience abroad (in this case Prague and, more generally, Central Europe) to better understand complicated developments on the global level and back at home.

Has anyone taken this class and knows the coursework involved? It's relevant to my other classes because I want to study in Prague my junior year as part of the GLS curriculum. At the same time I think it could free up time later so I can continue studying Chinese (4 years in HS). Basically, I want to have my cake and eat it too.

Assistance would be most appreciated

This is a bump, please see the above post.

Your semester seems already heavily loaded towards classes with a lot of readings. I wonder if the two credit course on the Czech Republic will be a lot of readings or more emphasis on discussions of the experiences of an international student abroad to impact/ understand global issues? If it is more “free” discussion and integration of experiences rather than heavy readings, then you may want to try it. Anyway, you have until 9/19/11 before you are penalized for dropping a class as an undergrad at NYU.

It would be helpful to see any reviews of the class from NYU students who have taken the class. Not sure if anyone here has done so. There is an internal NYU professor/ class rating system. Have you seen it? Maybe reading the reviews will give you an idea of what to expect in terms of the workload and difficulty of the class for 2 credits.

Thank you for the response evolving, I will certainly take your words into consideration as I continue to edit my schedule.

You can request that the 2 credit course be a P/F. You won’t have to worry doing A-work in the class, but you receive the credit, which helps with both registration placement and fulfillment of your 18 credits.

There’s a fine line with credits between rational and unbearable. You will burn yourself out and ruin your grades for a semester if you cross it.

Well, the class is no longer offered so it doesn’t matter anymore. Thanks for the help though.
