1650 SAT, 3.4/4 GPA (international stt) and the possibility to be accepted by BYU(UT)

I am Vietnamese girl. I took SAT on Dec 4th, it's my first shot, quite bad I think. Math 670( should have been better), CR 440( need much more practises, I am working on it), W 540.

I have just got my score some minutes ago and now I am confused. I plan to apply to Brigham Young University for the program beginning next Fall. It's time for me to complete my application. But i am afraid that my score is not good enough. If u have any opinion, comment or advice, please don't hesitate to write on this thread. I appreciate all.

In addition, I registered for SAT test next Jan, too. I hope I can increase my score. I think I should apply for BYU even though my score is bad because of 2 reasons: first, I still have chance to show the admisson commitee who I am on my next SAT result; second, I need to, have to join a school next Fall. ( I graduated my high school on 2009,so I really want to get higher education as soon as possible)

What do u think? All replies will be definitely helpful to me. Thanks in advance.

You do have chances of acceptance. Brigham accepts 69% of all applicants, and your Math score is perfectly within the school’s standards. Work on that Critical Reading score and I am sure you will make it. Remember Brigham only considers CR and Math score, thus disregarding Writing score.

Just a tip: apply to some more other schools to ensure you will have an acceptance somewhere.

Best regards,
Sandro Rodrigues

P.S.: I am international too

Thank you! Finance is a critical deal to me. So I want to find schools that provide affordable tuition and fees and some scholarships for international students also.

I got: BYU, Southwest Minnesota State Uni, Minnesota State Uni - Moorhead. BYU’s rank is the highest, it seems to be really good and competitive.

My favorite major is Hospitality Management, but I think Business, Economics or HR Management is quite okay; i still can work on the field I like when completing 4 years of higher education in an uni in the US, i hope.

UGH!!! Do you really want to go to BYU?? Unless your Mormon, I guess that would work out. But I used to live in that area. It sucks so bad. Asian people are almost non existant. And the ones who are there are completely white washed. I would definitely apply for UNiversity of Utah instead if you really want to be in Utah. BYU students are notoriously closed minded and unsympathetic to catholic people or anyone that isnt mormon. I lived in Highland Utah for a while, and im so glad im out of that place.

bingxing – BYU sounds like a great option for you, and I believe the admissions committee will see your 670 as very strong, and your 440 in the context of applying from a non-English speaking country.

I think you’re in.

As to not being Mormon (referring to RandomAdmit’s post above): Lots of students at BYU are not LDS. I’m guessing, but probably 10-15% – Recruited Athletes, internationals, agnostics, LDS members who are closet agnostics, etc. As with any church sponsored University in the U.S. (Baylor-Baptist, Pepperdine-Church of Christ, Catholic universities, etc), if you don’t want to engage in discussion about religion, you just don’t. The students at BYU will of course want to convince you to become LDS, that is natural, but it’s up to you. Religion is not like a virus — you can’t unknowingly “catch it”. You will have to come to grips with the reality that in the LDS world, white males are at the top of God’s order… but that is easy to ignore as long as you are secure in who you are.

Oh, there is also a BYU in Hawaii… much smaller, probably not having the majors you listed, but the same price.

@ RandomAdmit:
Thank you so much for ur suggestion and ur real experience! I am not really like Utah, actually. I just choose it because i may get good education with good costs in there. By the way, I am not mormon.

I want to have a great education by a suitable cost, with friendly and open minded people, and in a good atmosphere. OHhhhh, so greedy I am. :(

Thank you a lot, DunninLA!

BYU Hawaii has my favourite major and cheaper cost of attendance than BYU Utah. However, it’s a little remote and more selective ( according to some webs).

bingxing:

Per these data, BYU-Hawaii is not harder to get into than BYU Provo. [Brigham Young University-Hawaii Admissions Information - CollegeData College Profile](Brigham Young University - Hawaii Acceptance Rate | CollegeData)

Ave. ACT is 24, and … drum roll please … 37% International Students. BYU Provo is 28 Ave ACT. Your 1110 SAT is well above the average of 1070 for BYU-Hawaii as well.

I should think as an international student, you would like BYU Hawaii’s size very much. You can make closer relationships in a school that size.

As to remoteness, it is on the island of Oahu, a forty minute bus ride from Honolulu, the capital of Hawaii.

UNLV might be worth a look also. Best of luck!

Thank you so much, DunninLA and Poi!

DunninLA, ur suggestion is really helpful to me! U r so kind! :)

What is the major you plan to go for? If it is accounting or finance, Baruch in the city of New York is great! Their admissions rate is 22% but most of the people applying have very very low SATS so you should be a shoe in. The admissions costs is 4 thousand a year!!! Your in New York, and a lot of the students there get great internships in finance.

[Tuition and Fee Information - Baruch College](http://www.baruch.cuny.edu/tuition/#costs)

Thank you, RandomAdmit!

Finance is a strong major at Baruch College. However, I prefer Management. How is the internships in Management?

Not sure about your score, but the fact that you’re an international student helps a lot. It seems like most of the kids who apply are from Utah and so it makes their competition higher. I was living in Utah but recently moved to China and was told that that alone greatly increased my chances of getting accepted.
