17 credits and a part time job?

im an incoming freshman and have registered for 17 credits my first semester. my classes include sociology, psychology, astronomy, FYWR, and a 1 credit mini course. I need a part time job on campus to fulfill my work study, and I was wondering if it’ll be possible with 17 credits? I’m not sure what to expect.

First semester with 17 credits and a part time job can be heavy. Even without the job, you may want to go down a little bit. However, since you are a non STEM student without any lab session, it should be fine.

okay! I just wasn’t sure if that is like pure insanity or what, seeing as though this is my first time in college. however, if you drop a class I’ve heard that remains on your record. can that be held against you?

I was wondering the same thing. I plan on getting a part-time job with 17 credits, but I have a math course, a physics course, an engineering 100 course, an easy history course, and a 1-hour seminar about entrepreneurship. Like true question, if you drop a class, will that be held against you?

Not a problem if you drop the class early. Students add/drop classes and change schedule all the time. No one cares.

Yes, in fact last semester i did research work 10-15 hrs plus 18 credits. However, my prof was very understanding about midterms and such and offered for me to not work that week. In a cafeteria or something they will flat out use it against you and threaten to fire you if you don’t work during exams.

Going with your 2nd question, it’s actually a good idea to over-register at first. You’ll get very little homework the first month of 100 level, and always it seems some class is not as advertised. You can drop said class within 3 weeks and it will never show up on transcript and since you’re still full time, it won’t affect your tuition or fin aid at all.

If you want to keep 16-18 credits while still being able to drop a class, just go to the lectures/section of an extra class, if it suits you drop your least favorite and add that new one. Just let the GSI (for attendance purpose) know that you may add the class soon.
