My (Senior) son is applying to Art Schools and non-flagship state schools so SAT does not really matter that much and in some cases is not required. He scored a 178 on the Sophomore PSAT (did not take Jr PSAT) and I figure he does not need to get much over a 1150-1200 range to get in to his target schools (Lesley U, MassArt, UMass Dartmouth, Becker College, etc).
He is allergic to studying and my plan was to give him a condensed 3-4 weeks of prep for the Nov SAT, but I’ve realized that the Oct SAT will fit his schedule better, so we have even less time to basically just teach him how to take the test.
Even the CB Blue book seems a little overwhelming to him at this point. Any advice for books or websites or anything else that can help here?
The plan is to re-take in Dec if he absolutely bombs. I doubt he’ll get his act together to EA anywhere.
Read the instructions carefully so he understands the format of the test and how it will be scored. The new SAT is different than the old PSAT which he took.
Then take a practice test, preferably a college board released practice test for the new SAT, full length under test conditions. Mark questions he is unsure of as he takes the test, and go over these and the questions he got wrong and try to understand how to do them correctly.
That’s probably the most useful thing he can do if he is only willing to do minimal prep.
Khan academy and CB have a program that is free and from what I understand, if a student has taken PSAT before it will take that information and will have him study the things he needs to study most.
Thanks @mathyone and @mommdc, he started with Khan Academy last night. I also purchased a “quick prep” book that seemed like it was targeted towards this situation.
