18 units?

hello i am goign to be attending UCI this fall 2011 as a freshman and i have 18 units right now. I'm taking Humanities 1AS/A (lec and dis combined is 10 units), math 2b (4 units) and bio 93 (4 units). im pretty smart im math and sci since ive gotten straight A's in those classes in highschool. my english/writing is pretty bad though and im not sure if taking so many units first quarter is bad or good. any advice on what to do? 3 classes of a total of 18 units cant be that bad can it?

Units ability depends on the person. Are you coming in with any units? If so, how many? I’m just wondering to see if it’s even necessary for you to take that many units right now. Although HumCore is “1 class” it definitely has enough material to count for two classes. I personally had time management issues with only like 13 units, but it really does depend on the person. I think if anything, you should wait on Math 2B. But you can always see how the first week goes, but then drop by the week 2 deadline.
I would say 12-16 units your first quarter is good to see how much you can handle / you can slowly take more later because you’ll adjust to how college works. But if you’re great at time management, it should be fine

is a full time work load 12 or 16 units?

im coming in with like 36 units. (passed about 5 ap classes with 3’s and 4’s). i just want to take math to keep it fresh in my mind so in the winter i can go math 2d. and i like math. i found calc AB to be really easy and not a problem for me. btw im planning to be majoring in pharm sci also

Did you get elective credit for some of your AP scores too? I dont know what we do with elective credit.

Elective credits are beneficial for most majors so that you don’t end up taking random classes just to graduate. The graduation units requirement for UCI is 180, however, some majors even including GEs (since some GEs can overlap requirements), are still under the 180. But if you complete 45 units a year, and are in good progress to GEs and your major, then you won’t really have that problem.
Moreover, extra units can be useful for people who want to go into accounting, because to obtain your CPA, you must have 225 quarter units…

Alright, to be honest, units mean nothing in terms of work load. Like, it’s only the number of classes you’re taking, and it’s not like a class with more units means more work. For example, Chem Labs are only 2 units each, but they do require a lot of time on your part as well as some effort, while the lecture itself barely has that much work compared to the lab and is 4 units. I’ll be honest, as long as you take 3-4 classes per quarter, you should be okay in terms of work load. Any more or less can either overload you a bit or make you fall behind a bit, but yeah, the actual number of “units” isn’t that crucial. Just make sure you finish the specific classes you need to and you should be good.
