Okay, so I'm starting classes tomorrow and I want to know if 19 units is doable. Before you go OMG 19 UNITS!?, hear me out. I am a sophomore who will be taking Bio97 and Ochem+lab. That right there is 10 units. Trust me, I know what a expletive lab can be. On top of that, I'm taking my last UCI GE, a Category IV but it's just for fun, and the class is rated pretty much unanimously as a super easy A on Ratemyprof.

Now heres the part I'm iffy about: I'm pretty much done with all my UCI GE's and will not need to take anything else. However, I'm really interested in environmental science (had a blast in Bio94 to some peoples' disbelief) and I might want to double major in Earth and Environmental Studies (B.A). Many of the required courses seem to overlap with those required for Bio majors. Is this not a worthwhile endeavor because I'm going for the BA and NOT the BS? The B.S. track seems to be too rigorous (I have to take Multivariable Calc or Infinite Series and I'm a wreck when it comes to math). Also, this is a NEW program at UCI so I do not know if it will do anything for me. However, I'm definitely interested in the subject.

So anyway, after all that rambling, I'm at the point of deciding whether or not to take my first Earth Systems Science course, ESS7 (Physical Geology). This class is 5 units + a lab for w/e reason, and I do not know anything about the professor. Can anyone shed some light on Professor Kathleen Johnson? That would be much appreciated.

In summary, I'm just wondering if this is a doable schedule. Hope some upperclassmen can give me some info. Thanks everyone!

^Nevermind, please disregard, I have decided on my own that this will not be worthwhile. If I like the subject, I always have a chance to pursue it in graduate school. Please excuse my college student indecisiveness and bipolar-ness T_T SORRY. I think a MINOR is more what I’m looking for.

Either way, I feel units have no importance at all in determining the work load of classes. All that matters is how many classes you’re taking, and which classes they are. I think I took about 20 units during one quarter but it was on the easier side compared to most other quarters, so yeah, you just have classes like ICS21 which is pretty easy and has a small workload, while classes like chem labs with a load of work and somewhat hard (harder than ICS21 at least), weighing at only 2 units. So yeah, units…irrelevant indeed.

word. I’ve had friends take 24 units before and coast by because each class was pretty easy (ics 21 is a good example of a lot of units/not a corresponding amount of work). I’ve also had friends take 12 units and get hammered cause each class was a pain.
And I never found chem labs to be hard. just terrible, terrible time sinks.
