1st Generation American

Greetings!

I happened to be filling out my UC application when I ran across the scholarship opportunities. I was hoping you could help me out. For starters, I am an American citizen. My mother was born here in America (from Mexican parents), but my father is an immigrant from Mexico. In the application, there are scholarships for the following: First Generation American, and Student who is a U.S. citizen of Mexican decent, bears a Spanish surname, and has an average ability to speak and understand the Spanish language. I do have an average ability to speak and understand the Spanish language (I earned a 4 on the AP Spanish Language exam, though I am not sure how much that really matters), and my last name is Hernandez. Do those both apply to me? Am I still considered "First Generation American" if one parent is American? Thanks for the help.

Best wishes to all.

You can check the boxes for Hispanic descent. You might qualify for first generation, so I would check that one as well.
