I always read the same stuff from colleges: Your first semester grades of your senior year can help us make a decision. But how important are first semester grades?

I'm getting a bit worried these days, for I have 2 C's. Once school starts, I will have about 3 weeks to raise my grades, but I don't think that's enough time. I might be able to raise one of the C's to a B, but not the other C. (BOTH weighted classes)

Would a C (or 2) look bad? How risky is this?

You've got to show colleges that you mean business and willing to do what it takes to "make the grade". Colleges don't want to invest in students that will drag through their first year and then drop out.

Sorry I know it's harsh.

Here's what you should do if you want to go to a four year college.....show some improvement (even though you got the C) and when you apply, tell them what happened (truthfully) and how you feel you can do better...how you can improve.

from what i've read/heard, 1st semester senior grades are just as important as the rest of your transcript. One C isn't going to make or break your app. 2 C's, and adcoms might take a second look. If you can, work as hard as possible to get at least 1 of your C's up to a b.

That really depends on what college your applying to. Sure, for the schools that look at your transcript 1st semester grades when they are evaluating you, they are important. However alot of schools that I applied to (UC's in particular) accept/deny you before they even see your senior grades. All they care about is that you pass your classes and at the more competitive schools, that you relatively maintain your commulative gpa.

Don't be so worried. It is always good to try your best but you can't do anything about it if it is a C- say. If you have gotten C's in the past in AP classes they won't care as much but if this is your first time getting a weighted C and you get them in two classes, they will know you are slacking off and will question if they want you.

cjevers - you're fine. A's and B's, from what I've heard, is okay.
Now, here I'm talking about C's. I had 2 C's during Junior year (first semester, both AP class, both raised to B's second semester).
So, a C or 2 this year might not be great surprise. But still, I am worried my acceptance to a certain college might get revoked. :

I second BandMan - it depends on where you apply. The UCs just care that you pass your classes - a friend got into SD a few years ago with my sister and went from straight A's to Bs and Cs senior year and they didn't rescind admission. If you're planning on applying to top-tier schools, however, they will care, and 2 Cs will not impress - senioritis will be evident, and that's never a good thing. Just do what you can to bring up the grades, but don't lose too much sleep over it (speaking of which, it's almost 2 in the morning Christmas day and I still can't sleep.)

Again, I had 2 C's in my first semester of my Junior year (both AP classes, which i raise them to B's). So 1 or 2 C's in my first semester of senior year might not be that surprising, but i don't know.. is it?

Anyway, i'm not applying to ivy-caliber schools, but def. competitive ones:
NYU, BU, Wake forest, rochester, richmond, bentley.

Do things look different now? But keep in mind the first paragraph.

Kev- So it sounds like this will be your first C since you raised the B's last year. Try your best but don't kill yourself over a C on first semester. It is highly doubtful that NYU for example would rescind your application over a C in an AP class.

Sky- no not really. Unless you were applying to an IVY and you were on the border so they looked at your senior grades to determine your acceptance. Even then, I doubt it. My brother had a good hs record and all of a sudden got straight C's senior year and no one canceled his application him (Cal and other top schools).
