MichMom, depending on what he wants to do he could start with Math 116, 156, 175, 186, or 295 (295 and 175 are “Calc 1” but if he wants to do that he should start with Calc 1 again).

116, 156, 175 and 295 are offered in Fall. 186 is offered only in Winter.

116 is the standard Calc 2
156 is meant mostly for CoE students
175 involves programming
186 is the standard Calc 2 for LSA honors
295 is for people who intend on majoring in math/theoretical physics

156 should have less obnoxious crap you have to deal with. Also homework should count for a larger potion of your grade.

They’ve been restructuring all the math classes so it’s going to be hard for anyone to say what it’ll be like in Fall. But the idea is that it is meant to fill the needs of Engineering students rather than LSA students.

Difficulty wise they are supposed to all be equally difficult. It is understood that 295 will in reality be harder than the rest. The others should be about equally difficult.

Vlad, he is in the CoE, leaning toward mechanical but not 100 sure. What about 185, which I think is Honors Calc I. I hope he gets good advice when scheduling based upon his placement test and other scores. I was thinking that his AP credit from Calc AB would only let him skip over 115 and that he’d have to then start w/116. Sounds like that is not necessarily the case. He will find out in the next couple of days at orientation. Thanks for the input - it really does help!

If he got a 5 on the AP test he should start in Calc 2. The placement test won’t say anything about Calc classes, it just says whether or not he is capable of starting in 115. If not they may place him in 105 which is a remedial math class. That’s rather unlikely.

ENGR 101 will be extremely easy if you’ve taken AP CS and gotten a 5 on the exam. Very little work.

Math 215 is easier than 116 in my opinion, and the only thing you really need to know from 116 that carries over to 215 is integration. Math is one of the classes that usually hurts your GPA so I would try to test out of as much math as possible (ie. start with 215).

English doesn’t take take too much work, usually 4 essays per semester and that’s it (might be a little different depending on the professor).

I’ve heard orgo is tough, but im sure your son will do fine judging from his placement test and AP exam scores.

So yeah, the schedule doesn’t look too bad.
