Hey guys. I'm new to the forums, and in need of a reality smack. I'm currently in a community college trying to transfer into a computer science degree, along with a cert for game design.

I'm also working 30 hour per week.

My situation is typical; poor, single parent family, sick mother, my sister and I are the breadwinner (and going to school full time). I've explored my options since coming out of high school, so I ended up with a massage therapist license, and a real estate license.

Throughout the courses, I've taken general education class (2.14 gpa). It's just calculus/differential algebra, physics, and programming that is left. I'm also pursuing a game design certificate (which is 60% done).

The worry that I have is my grades. I just got a "D" for BASIC C++! I've been missing classes, due to taking care of my mother's recent medical problem. My weighted gpa for computer science is so far 2.0.

I am hoping to get into a State University. Do they actually spend time to read over cases of the applicants or do they just look at the GPA? Is UC a possibility?

Thanks for smacking me some reality.

How much can you afford? Can you pay for the tuition of CSU? Your best bet is a local CSU which you can commute to and near the work. UC is not practical at this time. Or you can go to a short vocational training that is related to your work/

I doubt a UC will take a 2.0 transfer no matter what the story is. The concern would be that you’ll flunk out since your foundation is weak.

Do you have your Cal Grant on hold while you’re at a CC?

How many semesters have you been at a CC? Where did you apply for next fall?

Do you need to be able to commute from home?

Assuming that you are a California resident, the non-impacted CSUs for which your major is non-impacted will admit you as a transfer with a 2.0 GPA, if you get sufficiently high grades in specific courses (probably the “golden four” at least; your major at each campus may have additional requirements) and take the needed courses to prepare for your major.

http://www.calstate.edu/sas/impaction-campus-info.shtml lists the following CSUs as non-impacted for transfers: Bakersfield, Channel Islands, Dominguez Hills, East Bay, Humboldt, Maritime, Monterey Bay, Northridge, and Stanislaus. In addition, you can check to see if you are in the local service area for any CSUs, and if those CSUs will admit you at the minimum GPA of 2.0 (see http://www.calstate.edu/sas/documents/CSULocalAdmission-ServiceAreas.pdf and each campus’ web site).

For each non-impacted campus (or local area campus that will admit you at the minimum GPA of 2.0), check to see whether your major is impacted at http://www.calstate.edu/sas/impactionsearch/ . If your major is impacted, then it may have a higher GPA threshold for admission.

Thank you guys for replying!! I have attended my community college for almost 10 semesters. I would have to attend for it 4 more semesters since I can’t stop working, probably full time.

I would have to attend my local CSU. Currently SFSU is my prime choice. It is very close to work AND home. Problem is, I’ve heard they are impacted. Naturally I should be speaking with the school counselors about this; but from the posters’ point of view, what would my job prospect be as a game programmer who graduated from a CSU?

Merry Christmas!

Game companies only care what you can do for them.
