2.3Gpa Chances Private Liberal Arts Schools

I'll make this simple.
I want to know my chances because I have pretty good extracurriculars/essay/satscore with a horrible GPA.

The schools I am considering from most selective to least according to collegeboard.com:

NYU, Fordham U, American University, Eugene Lang, Pace U, U of San Fran, U Tampa, Iona, Hofstra U, Pace university, Long Island U, Hawaii Pacific U

*I would put Georgetown in this category but I think that's pushing it.

Full IB Student
GPA: 2.3
SAT: 1900
extracurriculars: plays sports & made varsity, in four clubs, consistent volunteer service with international relations, dance, done abroad programs in Peru.

Just would like to know for schools that are a definite, maybe, and definite no.

Thanks,
Breana

Honestly, I think that your GPA is going to keep you out of NYU. But who knows, I might be wrong. You say varsity sports–is that one year of varsity bowling or four years of varsity soccer, volleyball, and basketball at a Division I school?

Other than NYU, I’m not familiar with any of those schools.

I just made the description vague so it would be easier to generalize.

I’m a junior and I play golf. So two years on JV, and two years on varsity (going onto senior year). Our record is undefeated for the past three years in our district and we’ve made it to state tournaments with a fifth ranked player in our league.

If the only school you are familiar with is NYU, you’re not the person I want advice from. A well rounded perspective of schools and perception reaching beyond labelled prestige is what and who I would like feedback from. Not just someone who knows a school by “name” since I’m pretty everyone knows of Harvard, Yale, Oxford, & NYU and have a general perception of how “hard” it is to get in. Opposed to other amazing and smaller schools that still have rigor but seemingly under-looked because of a smaller “name” like Colby, Bates, Rice, and Williams.

Basically if you’ve never even heard of Fordham, let alone Colby or Bates, it’s difficult of receiving any collegiate advice from such a narrow perspective.

I’m just interested in wanting to know what schools have a holistic approach to applications opposed to big gpa cutoffs that would be silly of me to even attempt too.

Fordham: 1% had h.s. GPA between 2.0 and 2.49. However, you are in the 75th percentile of SATs. Your ECs are pretty good, although I think Fordham is a slight reach.

NYU is a high reach

American is a mid-reach

Eugene, Hawaii, Pace, U Tampa, and Iona are a tier below the three aforementioned, with lower average SATs and GPAs. Here I think you have a better shot, in the match/high match range.

USF is a reach, especially if out-of-state

Long Island U seems to be the best fit/match with your statistics, although if you write a killer essay and show great improvement who knows?

Good Luck!

NYU became really selective these days. So unless there is something that makes you really unique and stand out from more than 30,000 applicants, it would be hard to get in with those stats. Both American and Fordham are reach. Georgetown is high-reach. I mean, your gpa is hurting. Since you are a junior, you still have time to get that gpa up:)! Anyways, I know a girl who got into Eugene Lang with SAT: 1500 and gpa: 3.0. So I can say that you’re in for Eugene. You can also get into LIU for sure. You might get a scholarship too. Hofstra, you can get into. Um… I am not sure for other schools. Since I do not know much about them, I’d rather say nothing than giving false information. Good luck! Hope everything goes well for you:)

Thanks your information and responses, it was helpful and thanks for speaking on behalf of schools you guys have good knowledge about.

Mostly I have been worried about not getting into a school in GENERAL. I honestly would be really satisfied with LIU, I just want to get accepted SOMEWHERE. These day’s it’s just been even difficult for me to imagine going to college in general because of such a low GPA.

I spoke to my counselor and she said very similar things about me. She said that while my GPA is low, but because I have great extra credentials and activities, some of those reach schools have possibilities (while not extremely strong)

happynari: I really want to get into Eugene Lang, but the I’m not sure if my good SAT score can overpower my very low GPA.

Also, does anyone know how reliable and accurate Collegeboard.com is? I know that their information like (size, location, etc.) but I have heard that the GPA percentiles and such can be sometimes misleading. For example on the Fordham website they say you need at least a 3.8 gpa while the collegeboard website says that there is a 1% of high school admits with a gpa at 2.0.

overall, thanks for your responses! would love to hear more!
