So during my Sophomore year I went through some serious personal and health problems and I slipped up and ended up with a 2.8. Got a 3.0 first semester and a 2.6 second semester.

Freshman year I managed to keep a 3.0 but now it's drastically lowered because of my grades for sophomore year.

I've at least managed to not get any D's or F's, but I still want to know am I pretty much screwed for my dream schools?

If I get a 4.0 junior year will I still have a chance?

Schools I want to go to:

UC Santa Barbara
UC Santa Cruz
UC Riverside
UC Irvine
University of Oregon
University of Colorado, Boulder
University of Arizona
University of Washington
CSU Fullerton
SDSU
CSU Northridge
CSU Cal Poly SLO

If you get a 4.0 you do stand a chance. Colleges look at junior year the most and some colleges even exclude the grades you recieved as a freshman.

If you have amazing extracurriculars or test scores that would definitely help colleges overlook your not so perfect GPA.

My son had a similar GPA leaving 10th grade, and managed to finish Junior year with a 3.7 and 4.0. Ended up with a 3.1 UC GPA, but he only took 4 “A-G” classes. You can use a UC GPA calculator and play around with “what ifs”. You need a 3.0 UC GPA to apply for a UC, but it may only get you in Riverside or Merced. Cal Poly SLO is harder than those two, but it might depend on your major.

He’s a rising senior, so I will have to get back to you on that. He REALLY wants SLO, but even though his SAT’s and EC’s are okay ( EC’s don’t count much at SLO), it will be a HUGE reach. UC Santa Cruz gives you “points” for a big upward trend.

“Improvement in Academic Performance
The faculty will award up to 100 points for recent improvement in academic performance. Students showing improvement in grades from their sophomore year to their junior year by at least one full grade point will be given consideration in this area. Only courses in the “a–g” subject areas will be calculated for this purpose.”

It will help if you take some honors or AP’s as a Junior AND do well. My son’s school does not offer honors classes, and only kids on the right “track” can take the few AP’s offered to juniors.

Thanks for all of the advice shrinkrap. I’m planning on taking 2 AP’s (3 if my counselor will let me) to try and boost up my GPA. Best of luck to your son in the fall and I hope he gets SLO!
