I am hoping to get into mechanical or aerospace engineering program and ROTC. I am a NSIII Chief Petty Officer and Captain of Rifle Team. English has pulled my gpa down. Honors Math and Science grades are strong and taking Pre-Calc and Physics next year. What are my chances of getting into NC colleges with these programs or any other schools in the Southeast with these?

Thanks for any input.

Don’t know anything really helpful for you sorry but here’s a free post bump :D

You should be able to get into NC State where your ACT is about average. As far as ROTC goes, you might be able to get an Army ROTC scholarship, but Navy and Air Force would be a stretch – a big stretch unless your ACT math is excellent. They might give you a break if your only problem is English and related subjects; but don’t count on it. If your are very athletic and in excellent physical shape then that could also overcome the low GPA and ACT score.

Remember, you can simply join ROTC and NC State has all three branches. Army and Navy offer three year scholarships to high performing freshmen. Air Force appears to have dropped that option. The Navy will love your engineering major.

If you do decide to apply for an ROTC scholarship, and you are interested in the Navy, then I recommend applying as soon as possible (like before the end of the month, definitely before end of summer). The Navy assigns you to your college (you give preferences but they make the decision) on a “first come, first serve” basis. Early applicants are far more likely to get the college of their choice.

Other colleges… For NROTC, consider Auburn, and maybe University of South Carolina. Your ACT is slightly below average for both, though. Consider retaking the ACT to raise your score, plus taking the SAT too. Some people do much better on SAT than ACT.

If you are really into the military thing, then consider the Citadel in Charleston, SC. It has all three ROTC programs. The Navy would be very impressed with that choice, and your ACT is on the high side there. The Citadel has an NCAA rifle team.

For Army ROTC, consider Wofford College down in South Carolina, which has an excellent NCAA rifle team. Also gives free room and board to all ROTC scholarship recipients. Ditto for University of Kentucky; competitive NCAA rifle team plus free room/board etc…

Here is a list of the schools with NCAA rifle teams:

GPA 2.9 won’t get you into College of Engineering at NCSU or NROTC. Navy is downsizing so can be particular as to who they accept. As NROTCgrad said, Army is prob. your best shot at a ROTC scholarship. Good Luck to you. My S did NROTC at NCSU, commissioned in 2009.
