2 day summer orientation

Has anyone done this? Do most people go? How is it?

anyone…anyone…

I feel bad that no one is responding, so I’ll add what I can.

You are not required to go. Have you been to APA day yet? During APA day you meet with orientation leaders and play ice breaker games.

Just think of the 2 summer orientation as that – a chance to get to know the school and meet some fellow incoming freshman. Get a taste of Rutgers. I didn’t get to experience it, but I know a girl who is an orientation leader.

i went to the douglass summer orientation which the general rutgers one is modeled after. most people go to the douglass one, and i think a lot of people go to the general one, but i’d say most don’t. the douglass orientation didn’t really affect my impression of rutgers or drc. if anything, it made me more anxious to come to rutgers, but maybe that was just me. i could have dealt without the ten hours of awkward ice breakers though, i must say. if you’ve never visited rutgers, maybe it’d be a good idea, but for me, i could have done without it and saved 140 dollars and two days of my time.

Thanks for answering, I was asking for my son.

He doesn’t want to go and he really is not the type to enjoy those icebreaker-type of games (who is!?) I have heard other people say they didn’t enjoy them either; seems kind of contrived. We were told we would be charged the fee whether or not he attended. We’re arriving home from a trip during the only ‘priority’ orientation he can attend so not sure he will make it on time anyway.

I personally did not enjoy my summer orientation. Maybe it was just me. I was very open to meeting new people and having fun, but students who went to the one I attended didn’t seem to want to be very friendly…

From what I’ve heard, people either hated it or didn’t mind it. You don’t have to go to one. I don’t quite remember paying extra for it? (Perhaps it was on the term bill? Strange.)

You don’t have to go? I thought if you didn’t go over the summer you have to sit through something like an 8 hour “orientation” session the first week?

If you go to the orientation page on enrollment pathway, there will be a list of all the summer orientations. For some students, such as pharmacy, it does say ‘mandatory’, but not for most of them.

From what I understand, starting last year, they made everyone pay for it whether they went or not. This year, it is $170, and will be reflected on your term bill.

rualum,

My child was an orientation counselor last year. It is a great program that the university has put a lot of effort into. It provides students the opportunity to get a feel for the campus and meet other kids in a fun environment before having to jump in to classes. Granted, some groups were more receptive than others. One group of kids all exchanged #s and became friends on facebook and actually got together a few times over the summer before going to school in the fall. It is really an individual decision, but most kids gave very positive feedback.
