I'm still not sure if I should go to the orientation or not. The fact that it is going to cost me an extra $175 is really appealing and I was wondering if it was really necessary to attend one of these sessions. How lost will I be if I don't attend?

Appealing or appalling?

My son did not go. We know kids who did and some really liked it and some hated it. I think they used Lynton Towers for the overnight and people complained about extreme heat.

When he moved in in the fall, he started riding the buses to get oriented. He didn’t have any problems. If you want to meet some people before school starts, go, but it is definitely not necessary.

I forgot to put not in front on appealing haha. Ok that’s good news that it isn’t absolutely necessary to attend. I was just afraid I would be completely lost when I move in but it doesn’t sound like. I just hate all those ice breaker games and what not. I’d rather just meet people who are actually going to be in some of my classes next year.

They really push the orientation and make it sound mandatory, but it’s not. It must be a moneymaker for them.

I thought it was mandatory when I signed up, but I guess not.

It’s not necessary though, I went for the experience and to meet people. There are ice-breakers, presentations and a campus tour. Most of the rules they go over in those lectures are common sense.

I thought it was mandatory too… received this email from them
“…
All incoming first year and transfer students must attend the university-wide New Student Orientation program in August. Our orientation program will be held on August 18, 22, 24, and 26. Please select one of these orientation dates and register online at http://admissions.rutgers.edu/pathway. Online registration is available now.”

I think that might be a different orientation program because the other one only goes up to August 4. It’s definitely not the one that is currently up on the enrollment pathway. I’m confused at to what the email is referencing.

Maybe because its for the newark campus… still weird that its mamdatory here and not in nb.

I went to Rutgers New Brunswick, mine was mandatory.

What school are you in there? SEBS, SAS, Engineering?

I’m in the SAS program but it definitely isn’t mandatory. It just says all students are expected to attend so you aren’t lost when you get there. If it were free like it should be I’d have more of an incentive to go, but adding another $175 to an already large bill is not something I need.

The freshman orientation that they offer for money is not mandatory. If it was mandatory, they would put that charge in your term bill.

It is fine if you want to go, but if you don’t, save your money and buy your books on Amazon. Get the Amazon student thing and you get free 2 day shipping for 1 year.

ps: We initially paid for orientation, thinking it was mandatory. When I realized it wasn’t, I looked for how to get a refund. The people I called were very vague but eventually someone admitted that I could get a refund. (my son really did not want to go)

There are steps to follow somewhere on the Rutgers website or enrollment pathway, I forget. You basically have to write (email) to them (summer orientation crew) saying that you want to cancel it and you must do this by a certain date. They will ask you when you want to reschedule. Just say you do not wish to reschedule.

I’m going New Brunswick summer orientation on august 1. But I was not sure where I have to go for summer orientation. Does anyone can help me with the location?

kingsteve there is a lot of information on the website:

[Registration Information - Prepare For Orientation - Summer Orientation - Rutgers New Student Orientation](http://nso.rutgers.edu/summer-orientation/prepare-for-summer-orientation/registration-information)

If you miss it, no sweat. Absolutely nonessential but it might give you some piece of mind to meet some of the people and walk around the campus. I went last year because I thought it was mandatory -.-

^last year the charge appeared on the bill no matter what. This year students have the option to not go and not pay for it.

Corduroybear that is not true. My son initially signed up when it seemed mandatory and when we finally found out it wasn’t, we applied for a refund and got it. They will not charge you unless you sign up for it.

^Forgive me, the first year of summer orientation it was mandatory.

If you don’t attend it’s doesn’t make much of a difference, but you may lose out on making a few friends.

I went and had a lot of fun, met new friends, and got away from my parents for a while. You get a lot of “free stuff” and there’s not too much down time that you’d get bored. If you go into it open minded and positive, then it will be a great experience. Bring a fan. It gets hot and even though I didn’t bring one my roommate did so I slept fine.
