<p>Recently got this e-mail - thought it was interesting that Marshall added 20 new faculty in the past year. Anecdotally I've heard that some of them have been coming from UC's and other schools with some financial difficulty.</p>

<p>What does that somewhat arcane term thought leadership really mean? Dont we lead people and not thoughts? To me, heres what it means in practice: Thought leadership is seeing Larry Harris, recently the Chief Economist at the Securities and Exchange Commission -- the agency that writes the rules regulating financial markets -- teaching a class of twenty students at the USC Marshall School of Business. Thought leadership is Kevin Murphy, who advises the White House on executive compensation issues, leading a discussion on that topic in one of our classrooms. Thought leaders such as Professor Zoe-Vonna Palmrose (named as one of the 100 Most Influential People in Finance by Treasury and Risk magazine), generate ideas that change the way business and our country is run. When they engage with our students, the elevated perspective and real world experience they bring helps distinguish USC Marshall from other business schools.</p>
<p>Thought leaders produce research that informs how America thinks. They testify before Congress, are quoted in The New York Times, and Forbes, appear on national news shows, and they teach at Marshall. ** Over the past year, we hired over twenty new faculty members. They represent the finest Ph.Ds from MIT, Harvard, the University of Chicago, Stanford, and many other top institutions. They are the next generation of thought leaders who had many offers and chose Marshall. I told them they have two jobs here: To teach, and to generate ideas that change the world. **</p>
<p>Our students have been the beneficiaries of this intellectual leadership. Now we want to share those insights with the greater Marshall community. On April 9, we are introducing a new on-line publication: MarshallINSIGHTS. It takes the best thinking of the extraordinary men and women on our faculty and assembles it into an on-line newsletter. It will come to you once a month. Its free. And its priceless.</p>
<p>Our major Thought Leadership Initiative grows our tenure track faculty and adds endowed chairs and Fellowships to draw thought leaders here. It also provides them with the resources to conduct their pathbreaking research.
