Marshall "Global Leadership Program"

Anyone get this in the mail today? Care to share any insight about this? I noticed that there's a $300 deposit, but the international relations sounds interesting.

It's great how lately there's so much stuff comming in the mail from USC!

We got it too. It looks like you enroll in a fall Global Leadership Freshman Seminar course that sounds very interesting- all guest speakers. Then there's a spring seminar where they go to China during spring break. Not sure what it entails after Freshman year. Anyone know?

This is the description I found:
http://www.marshall.usc.edu/web/Undergraduate.cfm?doc_id=3450

The first semester speakers are very interesting and insightful. The class is run by Ellis who is really cool and was just appointed Dean of the Marshall graduate school for the next 5 years.
The best part is the trip to China. I went to Shanghai is was absolutely amazing. You get to see all the growth that China has been rapidly experiencing for the last 20 years.
I think everyone in GLP ends up in the same cohorts, so you all get to know each other well. There's not a set plan of what happens after freshman year but I know that they are offering BUCO 452 to all GLP students during their sophomore year. It's a 2 unit, case analysis/presentation class which is really helpful and you learn a lot about being a better communicator, being able to express your ideas clearly, grabbing the attention of the audience etc. And from that you can try out to be on a case competition team where you get to travel to other universities and represent Marshall in case competitions.
Anyways, it's a really cool program and everyone should try to be apart of GLP.

sunnydaysee- So there are two classes fresman year (1 spring, 1 fall)- I assume they are MOR 470 and (I can't figure out the name of the other one.) Does this mean you are in the department of Management and Organization? Or can you do the GLP and still be in a different department (i.e. these classes can be applied to general business requirements?)

I really appreciate your input.

Hm, this sounds interesting.

The classes are BUAD 101 (fall) and 102 (spring). the case analysis class is BUCO 452. GLP classes are only 2 units each and only apply towards the 128 units for graduation. None of the classes can be used for concentration reqs.

sunnydaysee- thanks for the class info. How much work is involved in addition to attending the classes? Do you pay for the China trip? This sounds great and I really appreciate you telling us about this!

bump- in an attempt to get sunnydaysee's attention! Hope you can answer question above :)

Sorry, just checked the forum now..got your PM.
Anyways, class work was really minimal for BUAD 101/102 You just listened to the speakers and each week wrote about a page about anything important they said, how it would help you, what you learned etc. (very free form)
102 is fairly new, so there hasn't been a consistent professor running the class, so the workload may be different when you take it. But 101 should be the same.
For the China trip we did have to meet in groups of 6 to do some case work which we talked about with the students in China who were given the same case.
As far as cost for China, I believe it was $1600. When I went, some alum donated a ton of money so they were able to be very generous with financial aid. All I had to do was give a copy of my fin aid report and I ending up paying only $400..not bad for a a whole week in China :)

Thank you sunnydaysee- that's what I wanted to know! Your info is invaluable.

Is this something they offer to all Marshall Freshman admits? The letter made it sound like an honor, but there does not seem to be a lot of info on the website. My senior at SC hadn't heard of it.

Also, I guess there aren't any "housing privelges", (special halls, dorms, etc...) like the Deans program?

flatxca- You have to be invited- here's part of the letter:

"Congratulations! I'm very pleased to tell you that due to your outstanding academic merit you have been invited to join the Global Leadership Program at the Marshall School of Business. The Global Leadership Program is open by invitation to the most academically talented students in each incoming Freshmen class..."

You can always call Marshall and see if you can get invited- it's worth a try if you are interested. If you had good mid-term grades, you can see if that could get you considered.

My son did get the letter. I just didn't know if it was something that they sent out to everyone. It sounds like an interesting program.

It's not sent to everyone...in my year about 100 people were in 101 and about 60 were in 102 (everyone who was in 102 went to China). I'd say now it's about 60-70 for both classes.
Also, if you didn't get in but like to travel, A LOT of freshmen went to China last year through LINC (at least I think that's the program). So, remember, there are lots of opportunities in Marshall, not just GLP.

is there a deadline for signing up...and if so do we have to put down our deposit for USC before we sign up?

You need to fill in and mail the form they gave you in the envelope. I did this before I paid the deposit.

i received the letter but not a form to sign up in the envelope. does everyone receive a letter but only a few receive a sign up form?

Maybe you received something different. It is clear in the letter that it was not extended to everyone. (I quoted the letter in the first page of this thread.)

The letter also includes this in the 4th paragraph, "To accept this invitation to participate in the GLP, please return the enclosed Acknowledgement Form to my office by May 1, 2007."

If you received this same letter, you should have received the acknowledgement form. If you didn't but you want to accept, call the Marshall Office of Admissions!

If your letter is different, what does it say?

"global leadership program" isn't mentioned anywhere on the letter, however it still mentions the "2-unit course centered on International Business and a 10-day trip outside the US". they just ask that i call to find out more information/ask questions. is this the same thing? i though the LINC is just the trip without the courses.
