I'm so happy I got into cornell! I finally feel like I'm going to become a doctor now as long as I can do well in my courses up there!

I also wanted to add that I feel very lucky to have reached this point. there are a few people who look at this forum in hs ( I was one). I had a REALLY hard time in hs bc of family and personal issues that dominated my life at the time. I think you just have to be reslient and keep trying to get there... you will!

apirant im glad theres no confusion on that one.

vcoleman we have much in common with the community college, living independently, working, ptk, crappy hs experience, etc

Regarding Yale, we've had in happen several times in the past. I don't know who the person is that got in, but I think part of it is because we're in Connecticut and Yale has a commitment to serving the greater community. (Anywhere from 7-10% of their student body comes from in-state, and they do a lot of recruiting at disadvantaged schools in the area.) We have several faculty members who used to teach there who are always willing to write recommendations and personally contact their former colleagues to encourage them to take our students. We're a liberal arts community college more than a career one, so our courses have a better chance of transferring. We have a very strong honors program, so that helps students when they apply, assuming they met the requirements for it. Several members of our administration have connections at Yale as well and are always willing to use them. I know some people have gone through the Eli Whitney program, probably the majority, but others have applied directly to Yale College; not sure about this person, whoever they are (list doesn't give names).

It's not like it happens every year, but we've had really good success with them. Yale, Cornell, and Brown are the Ivy League schools we do best with, with Cornell definitely being number one. Dartmouth is by far the worst; our college president actively tells people not to apply there.

faculty connections definately help

thanks for the kind words all!

Adam, I wouldn't worry about this at all. Colleges like to see extra-curricular activities that evidence your passion for or commitment to something. Whether it's a school club or not is immaterial. In fact, something that requires your own initiative - as opposed to the ease of joining an existing club - can be even more impressive. Seems to me your creating a music label fits that bill. Best of luck.
