I just went to the Blue & Gold game at Notre Dame with a few friends and fell in love with it. I was wondering if anyone could tell me my chances? I should have my first SAT scores tomorrow, but my overall GPA is around a 3.7, with 7 APs by next year. I'm extremely involved in my school and church, I'll have 6 varsity letters by next year and possibly the soccer captain. I have also played in a travel league each summer for 5 years. I'm in the student council, yearbook staff, odyssey of the mind, I've been a camp counselor for 2 years at a local week-long camp, I tutor freshmen in spanish and teach Sunday school on the weekends as well as lector at my church. I just got accepted into National Honor Society, which requires a ton of community service but I already have a lot completed from my participation in my church's youth group. My math grades over the years haven't been so great, which has made my class rank not as wonderful as it could be. I'm probably somewhere in the 7-10% of my class...But my high school is an extremely competitive New York public school...My dad is also an alumnus, but will that help me very much? One more thing, as well; my grades as a freshman were well below the Notre Dame standard...I don't even want to post them, but my GPA this year has been nearly perfect, and I'm taking 3 APs. Will Notre Dame look at only the complete GPA, or will they notice the significant upward trend and reward me for that?

You have legacy, and thus you have the so called "hook." Your grades seem to be good news, as they are on an upward trend, and your math grades should not affect your chances too much. I got in with very very lackluster physics grades. Your community service will be an advantage, as will your years of varsity sports. In fact, I think you should emphasize your community service and get more involved this summer. PM me which hs you go to, I live in NY and Im familiar with the different public schools in southern NY. Overall you have good chances. Good luck!

We will know more once you have your SAT scores but I think you will have a pretty good shot if you get above a 1350 (old version) but higher is better. I would prefer to see 1400+ but then again I know that is kind of hard to do :). Let us know when you hear on the score but I think you are in pretty good shape right now.

Okay, thanks everyone.
red06 - I live in upstate New York, so I doubt you'll know my school. It's not that big, but there are a lot of students taking the same honors courses that I am and doing very well in them.

anglswings - yes, my GPA is weighted which, I know, is unfortunate but as I said my freshman grades were nothing to be proud of.

irish - I'll post the SAT scores tomorrow, but if they aren't quite as good as I'm hoping, then there's always next time...I'm registered for the June test.

knaufy, I'll be in the same application pool as you next year, so i know how your feeling. Id post my stats for everyone to see and comment on, but Id rather not hear from people how my chances are low. :-d ill be praying for your scores to be in the 1300 range.

I'm sure you're just as qualified as I am. I hate how stressful this whole college thing is, my dad has always put a lot of pressure on me to go to ND, but I never realized what an amazing college experience it is until this weekend. Luckily I have quite a list of backup schools if (or more realistically, when) I get rejected. Thanks a lot for praying, but I'm not expecting much...I was sick for the test. I guess I'll just have to wait and see...

yes, i know what you mean... my first test was a complete shame, i got a major headache about half way into it and that kinda ruined a huge chunk of it. Fortunatly i dont have the family pressure part. My dad would rather me not even apply, and just stick close to home where he knows ill be safe and can definetly get accepted. I think he's just dreading the day of a rejection letter. If I dont go there I think I'm just going to go to WVU. It has a beautiful campus and really sweet people. Other than the constant partying, it's quite nice. :D

Yeah, I hate how schools place so much emphasis on a test that doesn't really test anything. And it's completely subjective, too...some people are really smart but just aren't very good and taking tests, and if you have a bad day it could ruin your chances at your dream school. I'm so scared to get my scores.

WVU is a great school, too...but I know what you mean, I'm not a big partier myself.

yeah, i know. its just so annoying. my first one i got a 1100. :( tear I love WVU, but i rarely ever go to parties. Plus, almost everyone from our school goes there. But i guess that could seem like a plus once graduation finally hits me.

1100 is a respectable score, though, especially considering you had a headache. And I definitely can relate to wanting to stay local...all of my friends are looking at New York colleges, and it'll be tough because I'm looking at a lot of Southern schools as well as a few in New England. None of them are within a 5 hour car drive though, so I won't be seeing much of my friends. But I'm sure I'll find some cool people wherever I go.
