2008-2009 Housing Room Sign-Up Thread

dono, but look on the bright side. being miserable builds character.

A hedrick summit single? why would you be miserable in a single? a single is a blessing. the only people i say dont get a single are freshmen. anyone else, how could you turn down a single?!?!

haha yah.
i'm an only kid so having a single this year has been AMAZING. yay for peace and quiet, and staying up to odd hours without waking a roomie, and watching TV without headphones, and being able to talk on my phone without going into the hall. oh and i have an amazing view, but not all summit singles do (some just face hedrick hall which is really boring).

i'm also signed up for a single next year, which tells you how much i like not having roomies!

the biggest drawback is just the fact that you're in summit. i suggest you learn how to take advantage of the northwest campus shuttle (goes from hedrick to macgowan at peak hours on weekdays), as well as evening van service. basically you don't have to walk back to your room ALL the time, so that really helps. unless you want to walk. like namaste...

i'm stoked to be in a single next year. it gets really annoying being with someone else every freakin' second of the day. i just wanna be alone, haha. and i want to study with my lights on at night.
plus my roommate wakes up at 5:30 everyday and prints an average of 40pages on a slow inkjet printer. thank god i dont have to deal with that next year

LOL mme-lin is a dwarf!

I bet you do! ;)

How strangely erotic...Wait...that's not strange at all.

i totally agree with you xasiangirliex.
that's why i got a single too!
i want to be able to control the main lights, sounds, and to have whoever i want over when i want them over. i am so freaking excited for next year. i never had to share a room in my life except for in college and it has taught me nothing but oh...how i dislike messy roommates and how they throw away their bottled water cases into the recycling bin so that it takes up the WHOLE recycling bin.

Y'alls so spoiled. I'm just happy to be able to upgrade to being in a double. I was the third person to move in, so I got all the crappiest drawers :/ I would love to be able to not have to stuff all my **** into a drawer that can't fully extend because the door doesn't fully open because my roomie's closet door won't fully close because she doesn't know how to not let her laundry bag hang out onto the floor.

Also, next year, I'm living with the neat freak roommate who's so busy so she's never in the room. It's all good baby bay-beh.

mnucla, YEAH.
i also am suuuuper happy about being able to adjust the temperature to whatever i want. and NOT having to share my minifridge. and hibiscuspink, yeah, i'm spoiled. i'll admit it :)

I was considering a single, but people have been telling me that you get tired of it after a few weeks of it since you would start feeling isolated. I hope I made a good choice with a double.

lol i didn't get tired of it. i mean, i've lived my whole life in my own room, why would i feel isolated in college?
i figure, you go out and be social, and you come back and do your own thing.

however, due to the geographic layout of the suites, you ARE physically isolated from the rest of the floor. and when your suitemates are people like you who don't use the dorms to socialize, you really don't talk to anyone when you're in your room... so that gets old fast.

single would only be isolating if you dont have outside stuff to do.

hibiscus pink, i honestly do not mind being "spoiled" if it means that i'll be more happy at ucla and with my studies.

namaste, that is very true. i have a lot of extracurriculars going on so i'll socialize while i'm volunteering at spring sing or w/e.

i honestly don't mind the peace and quiet that i'll get from my small sanctuary up on the hill. :)

^hey we're in one of the same extracurriculars! but i never see you at meetings , ill say hi sometime (you're in CE)

^ BGDUB! i know you! i'll say hi too

Mr. Sic[k]o, I am not a 'dwarf' - simply, a goddess in excellent proportions (hence, moldau's assertations that I have the 'slutty' look).

Sorry if this has been asked already but I couldn't find the right search phrase to find a topic on this question:

How does housing work? Is there a rush to sign up for the housing you want or do you just apply, and they give you a random housing assignment?

Are you allowed to choose if you want a single/double/triple or is this randomly assigned as well?

I've read the "Read Before Starting New UCLA Housing Thread" thread already but am still wondering if anyone could recommend me a good housing placement for a bioengineering major. I'll be attending this upcoming fall if I get in.

hmm yah we should add on to the housing thread since it mainly deals with room types.

but in a nutshell:
frosh are going to get the rooms left over when returning students chose their rooms. this is why about 85% of freshmen end up in triples. you can rank your preferences of single/double/triple, but just accept the fact you'll be in a triple and be pleasantly surprised if you aren't.

you also can rank your preference for hall, plaza, or suite. they vary in size of room and cost. you do NOT choose your specific room or building- choosing hall could get you into dykstra or all the way up in hedrick. the housing thread goes more into types of buildings.

nothing is random, per se. but what you choose isn't always what you get. this is why they do room swap/CAR, which is discussed in the UCLA housing thread and on the website.

also, if you know anyone you want to room with, make sure you both choose the same things on your housing apps to increase likelihood that you'll be placed together.

and last but not least, make sure to do everything on time. when you've applied you will hear back in august about your room and roommate assignments. good luck!

Thanks for the reply.

Does it matter how early I apply for housing compared to the rest of the frosh? Is it first-come, first-serve or does it not matter when I apply for housing as long as I get the application in on time?

What type of housing is most popular amongst freshmen (hall, plaza, or suite)?
