Does anyone know how Presidential Scholars are chosen? I know that they're supposed to be given out for diversity purposes, but do they also need to be super impressive academically (moreso than the average Caltech admitted student) or is it strictly related to diversity?

Presidential Scholars are allocated specifically for under-represented minorities, so you'd need to be super impressive academically among that group. Since Caltech doesn't practice affirmative action, I'd imagine this group to be similar to the average Caltech admitted student.
