2008 Davidson Fellow announced

kids won $50,000

Davidson Gifted ~ Davidson Fellows - 2008

My god, Conrad Tao looks EXACTLY like someone I know!

I saw the picture a second before the name and though "Holy ****, how did he get on here?!"

50k is a pretty hefty amount to get. I have a local scholarship valued similarly that I intend to apply for come college app time.

Seriously though, I hate Bach..

I mean, I hate playing his piano music.

my boys STREICH AND CHEKARSSKY >>>> ALL

Take a look at that William Yuan kid. 12 years old and invented a solar panel that absorbs ultraviolet light. I wasn't even thinking about such things at 12! Speaking of 12, 12 out of the 20 recipients are Asian. Coincidence? I think not! ;)

but the smartest out of those 20 isn't asian....

How did you get 12 Asian? I only counted 9.

Piccolojunior, who do you think is the smartest?

I count 12 (or 11, depends on what you think about one of the guys).

Asians -
1)Akhil Mathew
2)Sikandar Porter-Gill (Looks like he is middle eastern, so that's Middle Asia)
3)Christine Shrock (Asian with Anglicized name)
4)Conrad Tao
5)Hilda Huang (how in the world she got the name "Hilda" is beyond me)
6)Saraswathi Shukla
7)Vijay Venkatesh
8)William Yuan
9)Charles Zhang
10)Divya Nag
11)Avanthi Raghavan

wow....
I can't believe Eric Larson didn't get the $50,000 dollar scholarship...
I bet piccolojunior thinks that Eric Larson is the smartest out of all of the laureates. I mean, he DOES have an IMO Silver Medal and made Blue MOP as an eighth grader.

No I think Streich > Larson. Larson is top-heavy on olympiads, Streich's equally dominant in both olympiads and research (we're talking about a kid who could have won a gold medal in IPhO and IChO if he wanted to).

O and southeasttitan are you jasmine?

^ Nope, close.

But I do like that you nerds all assume that the science people are way smarter than us literature, music, out-of-the box and philosophy winners. There are different kinds of smart, people! It just shows how narrow-minded most peoples' definition of "smart" is.

Um...a lot of math/sci people aren't just amazing at just research/olympiads. Arnav and viscardi are beast at music, for instance.

O nevermind I know who you are.

That may be true, but I would say that August, the girl who's currently a senior in college and who told me she's fluent in 5 languages--and who won $25,000 for her lit portfolio--has just as impressive a record. What makes her "less smart?"

Oh and congrats on figuring out my identity! LOL.

Yes yes, that's all nice and all. But we all know that they're going to be upstaged by an egotistical super jock who probably doesn't deserve entrance into a top tier college.

/rant.

I sense some bitterness about star athletes, Aero :)

Yes.

lol, this reminds me of how streich's bro is fluent in icelandic...but ya it would be hard for you to agree with me about Streich without knowing the man behind the legend.

LOL. Bitter + at least one of these kids (won't say who) has already been recruited for ACADEMICS by a leading university.

Of course he's ridiculously smart. A thousand times smarter than me, personally--I still don't really understand how I won a Davidson Fellowship. But with no international literature or philosophy fairs or Olympiads, it's impossible to judge us more artistic, less concrete kids like the other fellows. You can point to him and say, "He's won all these ridiculous titles," but there's a kid who completely redesigned the Kansas school system, and of course he doesn't have any other awards for that.
