2008 Freshman Profile

^ Rogracer has nailed it! The SAT & GPA are not the best measures but it assures accountability in that all potential FTIC students must have these benchmarks to be admitted.

Clearly Dr. Evans the Director of Admissions at UF is not doing a good enough job in selecting the new incoming classes. I hope she leaves UF soon

There is a bar graph showing the number of academic classes taken and percentage of those admitted. What is considered an academic class by the university?

I'm sorry we're not a good enough group for you then. There's merit in more than numbers and test scores. GPA is an especially unequal measure as there's no way of telling what classes are harder where. Two people could be in IB but one school could be more challenging. There are no IB scores to show that student with higher GPA at easier school did not do as well on the exams by the time admissions are decided. Even this would not necessarily equalize the GPAs, as some teachers are just harder. I don't know. Stats are subjective and admissions are tough to decide.

^^^^
As a group, it's not the students who should be sorry, it is the admissions department. They should also be accountable, but i don't see THAT happening.

The alumni have to work together to do something about Dr. Evans. We have to figure out a way to stop this maddness. I still can't believe their is a 134 point spread between the different racial classes.

I gave her the benefit of the doubt before, but now it's really starting to make the incoming classes more mediocre. UF is moving in the wrong direction!

I think the direction UF is going is to look at the over all picture of the student applying and not just select students with only the highest SAT. Over three thousand more students applied to UF this year than last year so you can't tell me it was easier to get in last year. Each year it get's harder and harder due to the sheer volume of students applying. At preview this summer the speakers told the parents attending my session that this years freshmen incoming class was the most qualified ever, but with each new years class becoming more and more qualified they are also seeing a huge difference in the students survival (life) skills. (they know nothing of banking, debit cards, etc) In other words they are book smart but not street smart. When I look at the students from my high school admitted this year (around 60) it was very evident that the best students and leaders of the school were chosen. I'm pretty proud of the type of students UF selects - well rounded . . .
If your bothered that not all students with the best stat's are selected remember that they aren't always the best students and the most successful in life. Each year UF looks better and better...have patience.

IDC...I don't think anyone here is saying "non-quantitative" factors should not be not be considered in admission. What is being pointed out is that the "traditional metrics" of student quality...things that matter in US News' rankings and other places....should be going up with the larger applicant pool, and it is not obvious that they are. Class rank, for example, has gone down.

This doesn't have to be a "either/or" argument!

^ Yes, but you have to admit UF is strongly promoting Social Justice as our primary goal of the new FTIC classes (just read that cheesy New York Times article that came out a year ago).

I have no problem with this concept, and would describe my position "Moderate" in disposition. However, I find a 134 point disparity between the races to be EGREGIOUS. I was proudly proven wrong by Tomslanksky's evidence.

Machen and Dr. Evans are trying to change the formulate in a radical fashion that fails to admit the students who have earned the right to attend the University of Florida. No other way to slice it....
