lindsay217: I don't think the donor matching thing affects your scholarship at all. They say it is like a pen-pal system, that sort of personalizes your scholarship. They match you up with someone who donates to the scholarship program as a whole - maybe by your area, University, or major. That gives you someone to thank personally, and gives the sponsor a sense of the type of student they are actually helping. You are supposed to update them on your progress each semester. It says on the letter that it will in no way affect the scholarship judging. Good luck!

I called about the "named scholars" program today, and Alamemom is exactly right.

P.S. I didn't really expect this, but I received a $500 check in the mail yesterday! Apparently the CT Elks like people who 1) do well on the SATs, and 2) decide to apply to the MVS scholarship.

:)

^ Congratulations!!!

Did anyone else get the impression that the donor would give an additional $4000 (for a total of $8000)? That's what the letter sounded like to me, but my mom disagrees. I'm probably wrong, but what does everyone else think?

I think your mom is right.

Anybody from Texas hear anything? No one answers email or phone.

Not any 2008 winners posted there at national website. Did you maybe win last year?

I won for my lodge, district, and came in 6th for WV. I missed nationals by 2 spots! But I officially get $1000 from the state and whatever the lodge prize was, which will probably be around $500. I really wanted that 4000, but I'm glad I got something at least.

You can find national finalists for your lodge by choosing the lodge # you applied to here: Elks National Foundation . This year's finalists appear on the listing for their lodge without a year designation. My D is a finalist for this year's competition, and her name appears for the lodge she applied to.

i got the nationals letter and scholarship money from the local lodge...but i was never contacted by the state or district that i had moved on in the competition. Is this common?

Got a letter today from my local lodge telling me I'm their 2nd place winner in the girls category. I get $500. The letter is dated April 15, and this is the first letter I've ever received from them. Up until today, I was 99% sure I didn't get anything. So...there's still hope for anyone out there still waiting!

Is the $500 paid directly to the school? Because I already have enough financial aid/scholarships/grants to pay for tuition/room/board, but it would be nice to put that money towards a laptop or something.

Texas- Got notified yesterday that my son's app when through district to state level which hasn't decided yet. National winners will be announced mid-May.

Anyone hear anything yet?

I found out this weekend that I got the $4,000 national award and a $700 local award. Yay for the Elks!!!

2008 National winners!!!! : Elks National Foundation

I was going to pass on the information about this scholarship to my Saturday College Mom's group but am hesitant because of the financial piece. Most of these familes have income in the $175,000 per year and up range. All have said they will not receive financial aid but are looking for merit aid. Will they even be considered for this award because of the higher income brackets?

Son applied last year, won second place lodge scholarship with highest academic score, but financial need component took him out of first place and district/regional/national consideration. Merit and financial need are scored separately then added together for total, with essay. So all cn be considered, but it is certainly not "need blind."
