2008 Official Brown Waitlist Thread

CatchAFallinStar, did they say most of the waitlist admits would be revealed on May 15th?

She said nothing else to me other than the fact they are planning to use the waitlist. Sorry that I can't be more helpful. I hope I get accepted! I'm having my fingers crossed!

So do I, but we still have three days to go. It's March 31 all over again.

I hope I get accepted. Hopefully, Brown tells us the decision soon.

skp:
oh yes it is. Gosh, sometimes I wish that they shortened the reply period, hahaha. That way we waitlisted ppl get to know sooner. But oh well. What can we do?

Not to be pessimistic, but when I read what you said I called Brown to confirm it. When the lady answered the phone, I asked if she knew if they were planning on using the waitlist this year, and she said yes. I then asked "so you know they are definitely planning on taking kids off the waitlist", and she replied "I don't know about numbers, but they look it over every year". She was definitely confused. Hopefully we didn't talk to to the same person and they really are planning on using it...

I just called, and the person I talked to had no idea if they're using the waitlist.

there is no way you will get an acceptance by the 15th, my year they knew that they were going to the waitlist by may 9th: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/brown-university/59833-still-wait-list.html?highlight=waitlist

Yes, and this year it will likely be much later than this because of the whole HYP fun. I'm not expecting anything until at least the end of May.

keep waiting ....

any guesses as to when? i know nobody knows, but speculation isn't always a bad thing...

well my year they announced may 9th and had decisions out the 16th. I'd imagine it would only take a week this year to. I would guess (with absolutely no reason to believe I'm right) that they will know a week from today if they are taking people (i.e. the 19th) and that by the 26th you will have decisions.

well harvard just started taking off the waitlist, so it's getting closer

Is a number of students at my high school are declining Brown admission for HYP, does that increase my chance of being accepted off the waitlist any more than it would if they were scattered around the country? I guess I am asking if Brown has any known regional quota system.

you're from..? I'm from China.

I hope not. I'm pretty sure they don't need any more students from the westside of Los Angeles.

Ok, I got an e-mail this morning from a woman in the Alumni Relations Department. She talked to the Admissions Department and told me this:

"The plan late last week was that the admission office would take about
10 students off the waitlist - - far fewer than expected - - though when
I called this morning I was told that they will likely admit more than
that, since so many of the most highly selective schools are going to
their waitlists in a fairly major way (Harvard alone plans to take over
150 off their waitlist). So, in the short term (next week or two)
Brown plans to admit a small number of students (larger than 10 but no
word yet on exactly how many) and to hold on to a group in case they
need to admit more as this process unfolds. I expect that Brown (like
lots of other colleges out there...) will end up going to their waitlist
more than this first round."

So it's not great news, but at least they're definitely GOING to the waitlist and the situation may improve depending on other waitlists (which are looking good.)

Just wanted to keep everyone in the loop.

Additionally, the information about "60 more students being admitted" was misinterpreted. Everyone's been talking in this thread about how they're taking more students because they had too high a yield. In reality, Dean Miller said that they had to have 60 more students than they had originally intended TO HAVE A FULL CLASS, not because they had overload. It's simply because somebody made the decision that Brown needed a larger freshman class next year, so they have to make sure those spots are filled (either by original acceptees or waitlistees.)

So that's where we stand.

Oh, and post #100 ftw.

Did they say what day the decisions will be made available, OH-Hai?

Thank jeebus! That is great news, OH-Hai. How do you think they'll contact the admitted students? I hope it's over the phone or e-mail rather than snail mail. The user who applied in 2005 said that his or her class recieved decisions via mail.
