2008 Post-application Affirmative Action Thread (Merging Various Threads)

sometimes in the chances forum I see people who say "hooks: asian, definitely"
and this is very wrong. asians are subjected to the highest academic standards.
if you are asian and you have the option of not giving out your ethnicity on the application, do not give it out.

What about Filipino?

Depends on the school, depends on the part of asia.

Some schools DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH ASIANS. So they recieve a boost. Also, not all Asian areas are created equal, just as 'Northeastern' is not all the same(Rural Maine /= suburban Boston).

any asian should leave it blank, colleges are overcrowded with asians

Notre Dame is one quality institution actively seeking Asian students.

Maybe the top 25 colleges have an overabundance of Asians, but for 95% of school being anything other than white is an advantage. Especially look into schools below the Mason-Dixon line and away from the coasts.

How much does it "hurt" admission if you are Asian?
Being Asian is bittersweet I tell you.

But if you're Asian, your surname pretty much gives you away. If you put on your application

Name: Zhao Li
Race: Not given

the colleges will be like, "Who are they trying to fool?"

like 100 SAT points
hmm what about jang, it's my lastname

um... I haven't seen anyone say being asian is a hook.... Dunno where you're coming from.

The only name you can possibly pull off is Lee, or maybe something like Tan... and only if you aren't math/science and don't play piano or some classical string instrument :)

I told Harvard I was Asian and my family is from Kenya.
Surname is Ahmed, so I could have gotten away with not giving ethnicity,

However, I spent a greater portion of my additional info section explaining my heritage and family history, and basically told them that I am not your typical Asian.
Family has been from India/Pakistan -> Africa -> America

Do you think they still consider me their typical 'Yu Zang' or do I come off as something else?

Sorry if thats somebody's actual name :)

Well...I specified myself as "mixed" (white dad, asian mom) and when it asked me to explain I put "Filipino/White".

lol but those Lees would definitely want to be seen as NOT asian so they would check white or something

even if you leave the ethnicity box blank, admins. will automatically know that you're asian once they see:

800 M
800 M SAT II
Piano 14 years
AIME

Oh, and don't be offended by the post...it's no secret that Asians typically excell in mathematics and play piano (or violin).

lol now it's violin more
and i play VARSITY TENNIS WOOT
which is getting more and more asian
and has anyone counted the % of asians qualified for the AIME? is it about 50%

wat would be a small korean population in a school (% wise)

Am I the only one who thinks this thread is ridiculous?

it is ridiculous. pretty much a subtle way for asians to rant about college admission =D

I have never seen anyone say Asian is a hook. Anywhere.
