Among the academic honors available to high school seniors, few carry the prestige associated with the Presidential Scholars Program. The 139 seniors selected for this national honor in 2008 were celebrated at a ceremony in Washington DC last June and have now started their college careers. Presidential Scholars are selected from all 50 states by a panel of judges organized by the Department of Education. Students who might be interested in applying to be a 2009 Scholar will find the application materials through the above links.

The United States Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964, by Executive Order of the President, to recognize and honor some of our Nation's most distinguished graduating high school seniors. In 1979, the Program was extended to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional talent in the visual, creative and performing arts. Each year, up to 141 students are named as Presidential Scholars, one of the Nation's highest honors for high school students. The Scholars represent excellence in education and the promise of greatness in young people. In honoring the Presidential Scholars, the President of the United States symbolically honors all graduating high school seniors of high potential. (Presidential Scholars Program Fact Sheet)

Among the 2008 Scholars, Harvard was the first choice for 24 of them, a particularly impressive number. Thirteen chose Princeton.

As in previous years, the Ivies were well-represented though over 40 other schools can claim to have at least one 2008 Scholar. The University of Virginia and CalTech each attracted three this year.
