Hello! I was wondering if anyone knew when the 2008 USNEWS Ranking will be published? Or put up online?

Now before everyone starts shouting about how the rankings are ridiculous, unimportant, and, on the whole, detrimental to most everyone involved- I should say that I myself do not put much (if any) stock into the rankings, and am asking this question out of pure curiosity.

Who out there can't say that they feel a prickle of curiosity whenver the new rankings come out? I certainly don't respect them or what they say about the academic world, but I would be lying if I said I didn't like to glance at them once in a while. :)

I'm just beginning my college search, and I vow never to look at/comment on a single ranking in the next two year. You are all witnesses.

Why not? How would you know if a school is good? You're just going to rely on prestige and movies to tell you that MIT is the best engineering school and you will never hear about Harvey Mudd or UIUC

Agreed ^ The rankings do serve a purpose for those schools that are excellent but are not well known.

Good point, but I would refrain from using the word "good." The rankings definitely aren't a comparison of the relative quality of the schools. They are an assemblage of various pieces of information that (theoretically) provide an objective "overview" of the school, its resources, etc.

So does anyone know when they will come out?

There have been several threads on this.

For the 100000000000000000000000000000000000000000th time - August 17th.

really? sweet I can't wait. I like how they do those special sewctions with the stats profiles like the ones here and they say what college that type of person should apply or has gotten into.

The real question is when it will be leaked out to College Confidential.

"The real question is when it will be leaked out to College Confidential."

LMAO

Someone will preorder it or get in early somehow and then scan every single page and put it in a zip file with a download link. Despite how bizarre that is, I can see some obssesed CC kid doing that.

You'd think USNWR was the Harry Potter book.

Personally, I won't drop everything to go to my bookstore and buy it the first day it's out.

^Perhaps it won't be quite like that, but I'm positive someone will rattle off the lists. I actually find USNWR quite useful, even if I'm not obsessed with rankings. The profiles in the back are great for referencing. It gives a lot of facts you can't find just anywhere.

Without the rankings it would have been hard to know where to start looking..
Great starting point... Helped me a lot this past year.

Another I used is Business week though US news is the most reliable.

Actually, when it comes to business schools and undergrad business schools, business week rankings are extremely more accurate than USNWR's.

FunPloyee...

This is why Individual rankings from US News confuse me...
Purdue is ranked extremely high along with MSU in US NEws (business) but in Business week it is ranked in the 40's along with Florida, Miami, Tulane etc...

I dont know which to trust as they vary so much, however, Business week does provide a lot more information with the biz school rankings than US news which pretty much just gives a number and a school by its side (fishy)...

As to US News overall rankings: they provide side information for each school and by looking at those stats, its pretty clear why one schools is ahead of the other according to them...

In the end i decided to look at overall rankigns as individual rankings varied so much plus average salaries from biz grads at each school (provided by Business week) to make my choice...

What about grad school rankings? are the individual rankings more important there? or still the overall prestige.

It's better than a Harry Potter book because it doesn't end after the 7th year!

No need to drop everything and go and buy a copy..

Id look at the list online first just to get the curosity off my back :D
