Can anyone tell me if a total score of 132 on the PSAT tests is good or bad??? :-)

I got a 221 (CR 80, M 76, W 66). I am a freshman, but I am wondering if that would have been good enough for semi-finalist in TX if I were a junior this year. How much do state cutoffs change from year to year? I think Texas’ cutoff scores have historically been around 215-218 (someone please correct me if I am wrong).

Also, do a student’s scores tend to go up between 9th and 10th grades, and between 10th and 11th grades? Obviously it differs for each individual - I guess I’m looking for the average change if anone knows that.

My Mom was a NM Scholar years ago. She said that there were 3 people in her class who were NM SF’s out of 59 students (not bad - it was sort of a magnet school before real magnet schools were invented). They had to take the SAT the following fall to prove their PSAT were not flukes. She does not remember if grades or anything else were included in the determination of which NM SF’s advanced to finalists. She knows that she and her best friend became finalists, but can’t remember if the 3rd person became a finalist or not. Does anyone know what items are included in the determination of which NM SF’s become finalists besides a good score on the SAT?

Monl225 - You can calculate your equivalent SAT score by multiplying your PSAT score by 10. So you basically got a 1320 SAT eqivalent. This works out to an average of 330 on CR, M and W. It is a bit low. Somewhere in the 5th percentile of all students. Are you sure you are reading this right?

221 is a great score. You obviously aced CR and M. I see no reason that you could not improve the W score. 221 will easily make the cutoff. The heavy lifting is done once you meet the minimum PSAT score. Following that there is an application and verification process. I think they are just making sure that the PSAT score is consistent with the rest of your academic and standardized test history.

My son got PSAT 229, CR74, M75, W80, Junior year, NY

80 on writing??? Wow, I wish I could get that :(

When does everyone get their scores?

The counselors at my school are holding PSAT results until next week… bummer.

Do you guys have any idea what the TX cutoff will look like for this administration of the PSAT?

My school is being incredibly stupid and not letting us even see our PSAT score until they’re officially distributed in January… I don’t even know what to do…

^ For Texas, I think you can expect the cutoff to be around 215 or 216 (216 being the cutoff for last year).

Does anyone know what the percentile/cut-off may be for commended scores this year? Is it usually at least the 97% (which this year is a score of at least 201) or is it the 96% (this year a score of at least 197)? In other words, how likely will the commended status score be lowered from 201 (97%) to 197 (96%) this year? I’ve read in the posts above that the score must be at least in the 96%; is that the standard each year or does it ever change?

“Silverturtle: If you don’t mind me asking, which CR questions did you miss?”

I missed a vocabulary question (put “affability” instead of “munificence”) and two passage questions, both of which were based on the astronomy passages (I bubbled them wrong; the answers were reversed).

Silver any ideas for the Illinois curve?
I was unfortunate enough to get a 213 and should have a 215…

Silverturtle, I missed the same ‘affability’/‘munificence’ question :

“Silver any ideas for the Illinois curve?”

I don’t really have any Illinois-specific information other than the historical cut-off, so 214 is still probably the most likely number (though anything 212-215 is plausible).

224 72 CR 79 Math 73 writing in Oklahoma
only missed two on writing -.-

I’m planning to send my petition this weekend. I’ll email it to anyone who wants to review it before I send it.

RenaissanceMom, I’m afraid that the cutoff for commended is limited to the upper part of the 96th percentile, or otherwise 200. The cutoff hasn’t drifted below this in many years. Since the top 55,000 are selected out of about 1.5 million, below a 200 as the cutoff does not seem likely. I can completely sympathize since I unfortunately got a 199.

Got my scores. A 229. Good for the horrible school I go to. Really good.

UHH…I am still mad about this stupid test. So many dumb writing errors cost me. I missed 5 of the last 8 questions to get a 61 on writing. If i had answered only one or two wrong, I could have had national merit. I am usually good at writing and I got a 800 on writing on the SAT as a soph. I hate this feeling.
