2010-11 Common App Preview Now Available

… The new testing section is dumb. I took the SAT once, and I’m only taking it once. I think super-scoring is kinda of an eh concept anyway, but I don’t really care. They look at the official score report.

btw: Can colleges see if you’ve only taken it once? Or a better question might be, can they see if you have used score choice?

Actually on the app it asks for the exam dates… so I guess they will know approximately how many times you’ve taken it.

Colleges see only what is sent to them, which can be restricted by using Score Choice. Whether an applicant has used Score Choice is not apparent to colleges.

Does anyone know if the number of spaces for IB/AP/SAT II scores has changed? 8 spots seems too small to encompass scores from all 3 types of tests.

^ There had been nine spots for AP/IB tests and six spots for Subject Tests.

That sounds more reasonable. The new setup is pretty stupid.

^ Many will have to resort to a resume in order to convey all of their AP scores.

One of the changes is bugging me…

Why are they restricting you to write the SAME essay for every college? How could they possibly enforce this if you apply via paper? I was planning on writing a very original but potentially risky essay for my reach school that I may not want to send to schools where I feel pretty safe. (I need something to set me apart… I fit right in the middle of their stats. Its not controversial or anything but I’m not quite sure how it will turn out yet tbh)

^^^^

they’re enforcing that next year? Where is it stated?

Where do you list your summer programs? In the extracurricular activities list?

Wait - so we HAVE to submit the same common app essay for all the colleges we apply to?

it’s really not the number that matters. 12 also lets you elaborate on more things you may be involved in.

for example, if you are involved in “Debate”, but you’ve participated in this tournament, this tournament, this club, this fundraiser, all related to debate, then that’s 4 spaces even though its one “EC” that you’re in, right?

so i like this new format because I gotta explain random stuff.

Thanks for the clarification.

so, from the moment they release the real thing (august 1st i suppose), when can we actually send it to colleges? I mean, can I like complete and submit it by august 2 or 3, followed by transcripts and recs a few days later, or is there a date set for starting to submit it too?

Lennin - depending on the specific college, application cycle usually starts around September.

ok, thanks! =]
and the sooner I send, the soon they read it? because if its true its way better to send it as soon as possible, right?

Some schools read by order of sending, others read alphabetically or regionally.

Check with the school to find out, though I wouldn’t bother them too much.

If you’re read earlier it’s better because the officer reading wouldn’t be so burnt out yet :)

Common Application names this:

I have a question. Some colleges and universities are exclusive users of Common App which means that they use the Common App as their only application for admission – online or in print - as well as allow students to submit everything required (supplements, payments, etc.) within the Common App Online system. So, we will not send any question about essays to those.Only in universities and colleges who are not exclusive users of Common Application.

Am I right?

^ no, because even when the college uses CApp exclusively, it may have a supplement to that, in which we’ll likely encounter an extra essay(s).

Thank you lennin:)

The twelve spots for ECs are alarming… Will it hurt my chances if I’m heavily involved in a select few ECs? For example, I devote 17-20 hours a week, 50 weeks a year to my main EC.
