2010-2011 auditions

Kiddo finished the first UMich audition yesterday. As I have always appreciated the information we’ve learned from reading these forums, I will post her experiences here, as an idea of “paying it forward”.

There were 17-18 MT auditionees yesterday, as it is a CHALLENGE to get the UMich academic prescreen materials (Common App, 3 rec letters, transcripts, etc) to the University before the 10/1 deadline for the fall audition. At the meeting at start of day, Mr. Wagner complimented the kids on their organizational skills in getting all the stuff together, and mentioned that later audition dates will have 5 times as many prospectives.

So the day did start with the meeting, first a talk from 3 current seniors in the program, then Mr. Wagner came and spoke. After that was the dance call, which lasted about an hour. Kiddo said they did ballet barre, some jazz in the center and learned a combination. She really enjoyed the dance class and the live music.

Each student received an individual schedule for the rest of the day’s appointments. Acting, voice and piano auditions were separate, and in various rooms in the music school building. She had her acting appointment first, and came in with her 2 monologues, which she announced. The auditor selected, she presented, and then they re-worked it a bit. Said that was a lot of fun. Her singing audition was next. She was asked to sing both of her songs, and did some pitch-matching. Finally, the piano audition, which was sightreading a piece of music at the keyboard.

We were able to attend the afternoon information session together, led by the dean of the music school. She gave a lot of good information about the notification policy, general university procedures, financial aid, etc.

Parents had the ability to hang out at the Pierpont Commons, a sort of student center for North Campus – there was a nice coffee shop and other restaurants. Couldn’t have asked for better weather to walk around the pretty campus. She was happy to get to visit a little with some of her friends from MPulse and other kids she’s met along the way at other auditions. Overall, seemed a quite chill day.

Great info, thanks!

thanks for the info! I’m auditioning in January, and I’m very excited to hear about other kid’s experiences. Best of luck to your daughter!

Has anyone heard from the mich nov auditons yet?

Thanks mommafrog. I was there with my daughter also and sounds like their auditions were similar. She thought it went well and left with hope. But you know did everyone have the same experience? This was our second and she also that that one went great. Yeah, I have a positive child…How scarey

^lheffernan,

I think having a positive child is a good thing. (And, no, we haven’t heard anything yet, don’t expect to for a little while.) Kiddo has 4 auditions done, no news on artistic decisions from any yet, so I consider this a little “honeymoon” – have no idea what the results will be, but if your kid did the best they could, then that’s all they can ask for.

I really believe that the colleges are “casting” their class – they’re looking for a certain type, or mix of voices…and we’re never going to know why some of their decisions were made. Too, you know there are many, many highly qualified kids auditioning…but only so many spaces.

Okay, enough early morning philosophy…as far as notification goes…if you read the forums and subforums here, you will often see that some people get notification via Wolverine access around 2 weeks after the audition, and some don’t hear anything for months. I remember Mr. Wagner saying to give it 4-5 weeks. From everything I’m hearing, it seems that the longer that a person gets no word at all, the better, as they are possibly still in the pool of people they may be interested in.

The odds are terrifying – what was it – 10 females for UMich this year…out of hundreds??? But each kid only needs one acceptance, at the college that will work for them…meanwhile, althugh I admit kiddo and I quite frequently check online status at all the colleges that she can access that…I also kinda like this “honeymoon”.

Thought I would pass on some news that I just heard today. Umich has the highest number of applicants auditioning this season than they have ever had, great news for them. Good luck to everyone in this group, it is an exceptional program! Wishing everyone the best! :)

Let me just say, I am so thrilled to have found this forum. Michigan is my top choice for college, as an MT major. I am so thankful to have this wonderful advice. Thank you so much and please keep me updated! :)

The University of Michigan School of Music,Theatre and Dance just posted on their facebook page that over 200+ are auditioning today! Good luck today!! Wishing each and every one a wonderful experience! :)

Just so nobody freaks out, I don’t think that number refers to JUST MT applicants but to ALL auditions at the school for various audition-based programs.

I can’t find that Facebook page. I only see one that gives a description of the Music school- no actual posts. Link?

I am sorry, I did not mean for anyone to freak out! I do know that Michigan has the highest number of applicants this year for MT, but the numbers for MT today is more likely to be in the 60ish range. The 200+ is for all departments in the college of Music, Theatre and Dance. I apologize, didn’t mean to cause concern. Good thoughts to all! :)

Correction…my daughter just sent me a message…80 today for MT! :)

theatremomma: it is listed as University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre and Dance. Under Organizations
