2010 Admissions

Hi all:

Well, for the past month I have been working hard to get all of the admissions requirements in, as well as a few extras to help my chances. All of my nomination form requirements are in and I only have 2 more forms to submit online to the academy (my counselor has to verify my activities record and my coach and i have to do the candidate fitness assessment).

I have also sent letters with my best times to the Cross Country and Track coaches. Also, I registered with the NCAA Clearinghouse.

I sent my Blue and Gold Officer an email, but haven't gotton a response back yet. Should I call him to follow up and maybe schedule the interview? or is it too early?

I haven't been contacted by DODMERB yet, but expect that I should be soon as I have more than 5 docs. submitted to the Academy.

I have done so much it feels wierd to me that I am almost done. Is there anything else I should do? Anything that I have overlooked or missed?

good for you- it sounds like you are very motivated indeed and its so much better not to have things hanging over your head....my only advice would be to contact (by phone or letter if possible) the B&G again and try and get your interview done...also try and get the DODMERB physical competed before the summer ends to allow enough time to address/resolve issues that may pop up unexpectedly....
best of luck!

You should also prepare for the interview. There is a book called How to Get a ROTC scholarship (or similar title) that has some interview questions for your preparation. There is also a Naval Academy Candidate Book (or similar title) that may provide some additional questions. Be able to articulate your reasons for wanting to choose this path and what you plan to do if you do not receive an appointment. I commend you for working so hard to get so much of the process done early.

Unless your state is different from most, don't expect to hear anything from your congressional nomination sources (other than perhaps a confirmation that your package is complete) until after their deadline. Some deadlines are as late as November. At some point after the deadline, you'll be contacted for an interview with their Academy review board.

Other things to do: Apply for an NROTC scholarship to your 2nd choice schools. Not only is it a great backup plan, but it means a lot to those who are evaluating you for USNA to know that your ultimate career goal is to become an officer in the US Navy, no matter what route you have to take.

The books momoftwins references are both excellent and available through Amazon. Full titles are:

The Naval Academy Candidate Handbook: How to Prepare, How to Get In, How to Survive by William Smallwood (a must read!)

and

How to Win Rotc Scholarships: An In-Depth, Behind-The-Scenes Look at the Rotc Scholarship Selection Process by C. W. Brewer.

You might also enjoy: The Naval Officer's Guide by William P. MacK, Harry A. Seymour, & Lesa A. McComas. This is also used in the first year NROTC courses.

Finally: It sounds like you're a runner. If you aren't heavily challenged for upper body strength in your sports, start doing some serious weight lifting. Looking at pictures of my kids' platoon doing the Marine Corps obstacle course during Plebe summer it is clear that many of both genders were seriously struggling. (of course this might not be an issue for you at all -- if so please disregard.)

Tridude87: Kudos for your early completion of the paperwork.

As unappealing as it sounds, I suggest you take whatever spare time you have and do some practice SAT test questions and sign up for the next SAT exam. At the risk of repeating myself, SAT scores are an incredibly important selection criteria. Assuming you can improve your scores, You want to get your improved scores to USNA ASAP.

No one promised the process would be fun.

Good luck.

tridude87,
oiixxg just gave you some excellent advice.

Thanks for the input everyone. My BGO contacted me today and set our interview for this coming Monday, so I'll have to check out those books that you mentioned. As good as it feels to be almost done with the process, now would be the time to start the NROTC application (thanks oiixxg). Also oiixxg, I do have a weight program together that I have been doing since the beginning of the summer (mostly because I HAVE to gain weight; I'm 5 foot 10 inches and the academy min. weight is 123 lbs and I weigh 125!! lol, probably because of the running)

Aspen, I am planning on re-taking the SAT, even though the thought of that test gives me a headache.
