I just noticed the 2010 sorority recruitment dates have been posted on the UA Greek Life website as August 8-15. Does anyone know how dorm move-in dates coordinate with these? I’d like to book a hotel room asap.

The rushing girls get to move in their dorms before rushing starts. So, I would imagine that rushing girls will move in on Aug 6th or 7th.

Everyone else moves in later, depending on their situation - band kids move in early, too. Also, kids who are doing Roll Tide on the River and Alabama Action.

LOL yes, girls seem to need to bring a lot!

Hopefully, your D can save some space by not bringing MOST of her cold weather clothes until after Fall Break ( a lot of kids trade their wardrobes at that time). However, she should bring “some” cold weather clothes in case there is an unusual cold snap or some cool nights before Fall Break.

My kids bring at least one Bama hoodie with them when they move into their dorms in Aug.

Great advice! We did that with my son at Clemson, but boys seem to have so much less stuff. In looking at the dorm videos, I was happy to see the beds at Tutwiler were raised high enough to allow for several under-the-bed storage bins. Think we’ll have to pick up a few of those!

By the way, the Hotel Capstone is already booked for that weekend (no surprise!), but I was able to book the Wingate on Skyland Blvd. in Tuscaloosa. We were very impressed with it on our recent trip. Of course we were given the suggestion by someone on CC. Lots of great info here! :)

cganyard, are you coming from out of state?
My DS arrived on campus in Aug 2008 for Alabama Action. He said that the girls arriving for RUSH were also checking in. BTW- There were some going through RUSH and attending Alabama Action.

We live 11 hours drive from campus. We decided not to travel with our son. He flew into Birmingham’s Airport on move-in Sunday. We secured a private shuttle bus service to pick him up at the airport and take him to his dorm. Knowing he would have to manage his own luggage, he only checked two large roller duffles and carried on his backpack.

My son did not have a car on campus until Oct of his first year. He also arrived on campus knowing NO ONE. I did not want to burden him with trying to find a ride into the shopping areas (Target, Walmart, Sam’s Club…) to purchase items I shipped a week before he left.

With a little planning, you too can minimize packing the multitude of items she thinks she needs. Student Package Services located in Paty Hall WAS OPEN ON ARRIVAL SUNDAY!
I shipped a large plastic rolling container with his bedding, towels, laundry supplies, office supplies, first aid kit, tools *hammer is a must if you plan on adjusting the loft type bed, lots of “Command” 3M products, basic kitchen sullpies, trash bags, paper towels, ziploc bags. I also sent one large duffle on rollers with some of his clothing. I used the “space bags” to compact the air out of his pillows, comforter, and clothes. We ordered his printer and TV/Desktop monitor on-line and had the items shipped to Paty Hall. We went to a local BedBathandBeyond to purchase items using the 20% off coupons for a few other bulky items (trash can, desk lamp and fan) but had BB&B ship them to Paty Hall. One very helpful item I packed in the large rolling container was a folding dolly I purchased at Sam’s Club. That has been very useful. My son’s dorm was a good three blocks walk from Paty Hall. He was able to stack some of his packages and secure them with bungee cords (also sent with the dolly) eliminating multiple trips back to Paty Hall. After he was on campus a few weeks, his roommate offered to drive him to Walmart to purchase a bike. He had no complaints. If I had to do it all over again, I would change a thing. Who wants to stand in long lines to purchase the same things EVERY OTHER STUDENT IS LOOKING FOR? This fall I drove down with my son to share the driving duties and keep the long drive from becoming stale. I stayed in a hotel two nights. He drove me to the airport for my return home. While in Tuscaloosa, I stopped in Walmart for a few things. There was not one trash/waste can in the entire store!

Good to plan early! It’s amazing to see that hotels are booking now! wow!

I was happy to see the beds at Tutwiler were raised high enough to allow for several under-the-bed storage bins.

Yes, there are some great storage containers with drawers and such that can fit nicely under those things.

I also got my kids a multi-drawer strorage, and I put various OTC meds in one drawer. The last thing a kid needs if he wakes up with a cold, sore throat, or stomach ache (or wakes in the middle of night), is trying to get to a campus store to get some relief.

A good mix to include (as long as no allergies to meds) is Tylenol, Motrin, Naproxen, Excedrin, throat spray, cough drops, antihistamine, decongestant, Pepto Bismal, and Tylenol PM (of course, generics are ok ) I also included band-aids, cortisone cream, and Neosporin with Pain relief (I love that stuff! LOL).

So if I understand this if the girls want to rush, they have to be down there that first weekend in August. that will make it simple for my dd as there is no way we would be able to get her down there then as we won’t even be here. Can girls rush as soph’s?

*Sorority Recruitment 2009 will take place August 9-16. Residence halls for women participating in recruitment will open at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, August 9.

August 9 Convocation
August 10-11 Open Houses
August 12-13 Philanthropy Parties
August 14 Skit Day
August 15 Preference Parties
August 16 Bid Day (12:00 p.m.)

*

So, it looks like they have the girls move in during the morning, and then start Rush later that day. I wonder what time Rush starts that day.

But, obvously, if you’re coming from out-of-town/state, it’s best to arrive a day early, so you can arrive on campus by 8 to quickly get your D settled.

It’s surprising to me that sorority recruitment starts on a Saturday next year. Normally this and Alabama Action/Outdoor Action moves in the Saturday and Sunday before normal move in. I think we had 3 or 4 girls rushing who also did Alabama Action, so it is doable, you will just be very busy.

Lucky enough, this year’s early move-in was the same weekend as Alabama’s tax-free weekend. I arrived a couple days early and did a bunch of shopping in the Birmingham area. I actually met a lot of UA parents, when I went over to the Shelby County side of Birmingham (Jefferson County still had a 2% tax, Shelby and Tuscaloosa didn’t). The Birmingham area has every store imaginable for dorm shopping Tuscaloosa has plus Costco, Ross, and popular mall stores.

A word to the wise, the Tuscaloosa Wal-Mart is a zoo during move-in and most other days. If coming from Birmingham, try the Bessemer one (Exit 108) instead or in Tuscaloosa, cross the river over to Northport and go to that Wal-Mart (a local secret, it’s about 3 miles from campus just outside the Northport city limits).

It’s entertaining to see how much people bring. There will be people to help, but remember that a bedroom is about 10’x10’.

According to the Greek life website, sorority recruitment starts on August 8th–which is a Sunday (unless I’m reading something incorrectly). I can’t believe the girls move in the same morning they start rush. Yikes! Talk about a crazy day!!

Thanks everyone for the great suggestions. Yes, momof3boyz, we will be coming from Northern Virginia, just south of DC…so about a 13 hr drive. Sigh. I’m so impressed with your son’s independent start at UA, but know that my daughter will want us to drive her down and help her unpack and set up her room. She’s the baby, a female, and we made the trip with her two brothers (different schools), so I think we’ll do it this time, too. I am happy to know about the Student Package Service in Paty Hall, though, since we may end up shipping some things–and will probably ship some cold weather clothes later in the year. Being an OOS student can be a pain (mostly for the parents and the checkbook!), but we’ve done it before… Being organized is the key, which is the reason I booked the hotel already. Not trying to panic anyone, there are lots of hotels in Tuscaloosa, I’m just used to Clemson, which has a handful of hotels and thousands of people converging on the tiny little town on moving day. You can only imagine what game weekends are like there!!

PegV420, yes girls can rush as sophomores though “they” say it’s typically more difficult–though not impossible by any means. As for Spring Rush (affectionately known as COB or continuous open bidding), my understanding is that it rarely occurs at UA, since the chapters are usually at capacity following Fall rush, but I may be wrong. I’ve also read that Delta Gamma, which is a wonderful national sorority, will be colonizing (i.e. starting a brand new chapter) at UA in the Fall of 2011. It’s very exciting, and that sorority, in particular, will be looking for lots of upperclassmen to start the new chapter! Alpha Phi, another wonderful national sorority, just colonized at Bama a year or two ago, so the Greek community is definitely alive and well…

For those of you new to sorority recruitment or SEC sorority recruitment (which I hear is a whole different ballgame!) there’s a forum/network called greekchat.com that has more information than you ever wanted to know! There are loads of threads on Bama sorority recruitment and suggestions for ways to navigate the process, including info on how to obtain recs. It’s a wealth of information!

That Sunday, they don’t actually start rushing, they go to a convocation (which I imagine is in the late afternoon or evening). The actual “get-togethers” begin on Monday, but you have to attend that convocation.

That sounds much better, thanks for correcting me! It really is a whirlwind recruitment, isn’t it?! 1600 girls going through rush in one week. At my school, we had 600 girls going through, and rush lasted three loooooong weeks. I do like the fact that Bama’s rush is over before classes begin (it is, isn’t it?). We rushed during the first two weeks of classes, and that was a nightmare–particularly for the actives who were up until the wee hours of the morning!

If any of the parents of sorority girls at UA can give us more info or suggestions–or correct any info here–I’d really appreciate it! :)

For some reason, I was seeing that the events started August 7th, not 8th, so it does start on Sunday, but there should be a move-in on Saturday too, sorry!

I looked at the info for last Aug, and it says that move in is that Sunday morning. I think that is because there really isn’t any “rushing” being done that day. Just the convocation, which is an evening affair.

It will be a busy day…but if you arrive on Saturday and perhaps get some things ready to be immediately put away (such as clothes on hangers), then move-in can go rather quickly the next day.

Last year they had a scheduled move in for Tutweiller,
I believe some girls got to move in on Saturday & some on Sunday!

I think Res Life set it up that way because Tut is so full (all girls/ many rushing)
& an older building.
So they scheduled a few families at a time to not fill up the elevators etc.

My D lives in Riverside and was allowed only Sunday am move in.

With a little planning it all went rather smooth. Less than 3 hours.
That included hanging wall art & moving beds!!

Convocation is at night & the girls do not dress up. It is very casual,
they realize you just moved in!!
