2010 Official Biosciences Interviews and Results

Congrats to all who got the UCSF invites…! I am really hoping for one too…really wanna get away to warmer weather…stuck in 10-20inches of snow today in DC:(

yeah, i saw a couple of people who posted that they got invites on thegradcafe forums. hope systems bio is on the way…

Heh, I’m stuck in Boston because of the snow in DC.

damn you Harvard!!!

Are you sure, MolSysBio??

this is what i saw…

two people stated that they got invites from Harvard Neuroscience here:

I applied to the University of Minnesota’s neuroscience program, but we’re probably not going to hear anything back until the second week of January or so. Keeping my fingers crossed, though!

@cytometry

I applied to the Dartmouth MCB program, haven’t heard anything from then yet. Looks like someone got a interview invite over at the gradcafe

Anyone heard back from Weill Cornell Immunology, Rockefeller, Columbia Immuno&Micro, Harvard Immunology?

i have zero invites despite having several years of research experience, posters, one pub, and a masters degree. i am assuming the worst as well.

i see no reason to freak out…

^Agreed.

In all seriousness, guys, the vast majority of schools are NOT actively sending out invitations at the moment. Of those that are, most are on a rolling basis; you’re most likely not going to hear much back until the beginning/middle of January.

Now is not the time to start freaking out. You have to remember that the people dealing with your applications are at an incredibly busy time of the year already, both professionally–end of Fall quarter, finals week, grading, administrative work–and personally, with the upcoming holidays.

If you’re concerned about a particular school, try doing something to help calm yourself down: look in last year’s thread on this site, or the results search on TheGradCafe, and see when the program began issuing interview dates. I can almost guarantee they weren’t until January, or at least not until after Christmas. Of the ten schools I’m applying to, seven of them haven’t even issued invites until the first few weeks of January; and all of them were “late December til early January”.

In short, relax. There’s still a LOT of time left on the clock.

EDIT: And to put my money where my mouth is, here’s my list of schools with the dates they sent out interviews last cycle.

UC Berkeley (Neuroscience): 1/8/2009
UCSF (Neuroscience): 1/10/2008; 1/13-14/2009
UMinnesota, Twin Cities (Neuroscience): 1/13/2006; 1/16/2008; 1/9/2009
UMich Ann Arbor (PIBS): 1/19/2008; 12/17-20/2008; 12/17-18/2009.
UW, Madison (Neuroscience): 1/12/2008; 12/23/2008
University of Rochester: 1/9/2008
Columbia University (Neurobiology and Behavior): 12/20/2008
Albert Einstein College of Medicine (Neuroscience): 1/9/2009; 1/16/2009; 3/18/2009
Duke University (CMB Umbrella program): 2/1/2008; 1/23/2009
Johns Hopkins (Neuroscience): 1/3/2008; 3/4/2008; 1/9/2009; 1/12/2009

You’re all freaking out waaaaay too early. Last year, I got interviews at 7 out of 10 places I applied. The earliest was the first week of January, the latest was the first week in February. All the interview dates were late January to early March. You can be a very competitive applicant and not have heard anything yet. I think if you don’t hear anything 2 or 3 weeks before the actual interview date, then you can probably scratch that school off your list.

Yeah, guys, don’t freaking out! Stop checking this forum and enjoy the holidays!

just out of curiousity for the people who got interviews to BMS at USCF are u from CA?

To the people who applied to UCSF BMS and are worried about not being among the first batch of interview invitees:

Yes, there were record-breaking numbers of applicants, but there are going to be ~80 at the interviews (20 more than last year), and they want the incoming class size to go back up from the last class. They definitely aren’t done sending out invites yet, so calm down and enjoy your breaks!

cool info evoviro! what was the incoming size last year? and do u know what the typical/targeted class size this year?

I know someone, former coworker, in the UCSF BMS program. She said last year, there were about 60 people who interviewed and approximately 20 enrolled this fall. The BMS program lists current students on their website. I heard the same information EvoViro said about # of apps/interviews from her as well.

I am still not feeling too good about my chances here or anywhere else. I don’t know if it is true or not, but I have heard programs notify(for interviews) the best candidates first.

If interviews aren’t offered all at once, then it makes sense the individuals who get offers early on get them because they are the clearly desirable students. The latest interview offers might be made only because the earliest ones are declined, as well.
