2010 Official Biosciences Interviews and Results

I didn’t apply here but I think some of y’all were curious about Cornell… On thegradcafe.

Cornell (Weill) Biosciences (Neuroscience), PhD Interview via E-mail on 21 Dec 2009 A 21 Dec 2009 2/17-2/19

UCSD BMS interview invite last Friday. Interviews are Feb19-20.

The things I’d do for a BCMB version of that Cornell email.

the things id do for ANY invite…

For everyone out there worried about interviews, stop worrying! Almost all school have multiple interview dates and send out waves of invitations. The same thing will happen with acceptances. Some committees haven’t even met yet to go over applications. And, of course, not all departments send out their invitations at the same time. It is true that first round interviews at top-tier schools usually mean you have a very high likelihood of acceptance, but they are also usually only given to exceptional candidates. So, unless you have 5+ years of independent research experience, a first-author paper, or impeccable grades and GREs, don’t even think about interviews until after New Years… Also, be realistic about the Ivy programs and Rockefeller: EVERYONE applies to them. You are competing against people with 4.0s and first-author Nature papers, triple-majors, and Olympic medals (no joke, I know that the GPP program has two of them).

Anyway, I’m even starting to loose myself here, but I think all I’m trying to say is, realistically, wait until January to start worrying about interviews, and then wait until the end of January to start panicking. They really do come in waves, I promise!

How, exactly, is this supposed to be calming? :P

To say nothing of the fact that plenty of individuals with “first-round” interview invites have none of those credentials.

I knew I should have put down Fantasy Football Champ on my app!!!

-----> i did not have any of those but still got interviews from top schools. =P i really think it depends on the overall package. wait till the holidays are done and im sure everyone will get offers and will eventually have to schedule interviews week after week. good luck all!

I got an interview at Berkeley MCB last week. It’s scheduled for February. MCB invited 50 people less than last year. It’s pretty rough. I think I was in the first wave of admissions so they might not be done yet…

See ya there, kryptonsa

Yep, see ya! :)

No, they’re definitely not done. They told me Berkeley MCB would continue to make interview offers through January 31st.

haha…first author nature, olympics, blah blah where do you get this from? believe it or not, a lot of people who apply to these schools are regular people like the rest of us. nobody said getting into biology grad school was comparable to getting into harvard med or something. that’s definitely unnecessary hyperbole, so don’t freak out until the end of january.

Oh also got the UCLA ACCESS invite last week… if anyone wanted to know.

Applied to four schools:

Berkeley MCB
Stanford MCP, Dev. Bio. and Genetics
UCLA ACCESS
WashU DBBS

Now a hell of a lot of questions:

I know Wash U started answering… does anybody know when? Are they done? What about Stanffy? I got Berkeley and UCLA so far. Berkeley is my dream school but if Stanford says “yes”…I won’t know what to do. Do you think all the budget cuts are gonna affect grad students at Berkeley? Also, how selective is MCB at Cal now that they’re inviting 50 fewer people? how many people usually apply? How many are invited? I can’t find any of these juicy details. ARGH!!! Also…I was planning on applying to Rutgers as a backup since I went there during Summer 2008 for the RISE Program. (Berkeley Amgen Scholars Program this year), should I even apply now that Berkeley responded? How likely is it to be rejected after invited for interview?

Thanks guys…I just found this site and I love it.

Cheers from Puerto Rico.

Has anyone heard from Penn Immunology, Harvard Immunology, or Stanford Immunology?

Also does the same committee read over apps at Berkeley MCB, or do different committees read over apps depending on your research interests. For example, if I applied to Berkeley MCB with an interest in immunology, will the immunology department read my application?

Thanks.

invite for Kentucky IBS by e-mail today.

I am not sure if anyone has asked this already but I am wondering generally how people respond to email invites? I am sure you mention which weekend you prefer to interview but do you also mention where you will be traveling from? Who you would be interested in interviewing with? Or do you only include these things if they ask for them? Any help with this would be appreciated!

P.S. I have received interview invites to the University of Chicago and Harvard, both Immunology programs.

Jeg did you apply to any other immunology programs? By the way, congrats on both interviews.

Good news!! I just got a Sloan Kettering Interview by email! oh my god, i’m going crazy! I plan on declining a few of the interviews I have received, so hopefully that will open up spots for you guys. Good luck everyone!
