2010 Official Biosciences Interviews and Results

Does anyone know when UVA admissions committees meet? Is it program specific? If so, I’m curious about the MII track. I read somewhere that people got invites in December for a late January interview weekend - is this generic or specific to departments? UVA is probably my top choice and I’ve heard nothing. I’m starting to worry that they didn’t consider my application, because it still says “Status: Incomplete (Transcript not received)” despite several emails and phone calls confirming that they have it and that it is complete…

So has anyone heard anything? Thanks.

pentaligin

no, I didn’t get interview from harvard neuro…the only one i have is from HHMI’s Janelia Farm on jan-18.
your MIT BCS interview - is this the Brain and Cognitive Sciences (BCS) or something else? if so, when is your interview? i heard their date is MArch 6,7.

@ lassathrax – I heard from UVA on Monday. I applied to their Molecular Medicine Program. My interview is scheduled for Jan 28 weekend. Hope this helps.

@ choijae,

I am not sure how schools handle international applicants. I am international too and only have 1 interview so far…fortunately it’s at my top choice! so if I get in then I’m just withdrawing from my other apps. :-)

well i did get an email from UArizona that they’ve started to review so lets see…

god this waiting sucks hell

Please people, if you want to get into a California school, first step: stop calling it “cali.” I say this because I care - you don’t want to look like a idiot at interviews…

^ so true.

Hamster09, I haven’t gotten an interview from yale yet. I suspect that it’s either next week or nothing. I got my 10% from the admissions statistics someone posted earlier. It said something like 100 (a little more than 100) apply, and they have an average amount of 7 students attend. I believe someone also said that they typically admit 50% of those they ask to interview. I would just like to know the numbers in between. Have you gotten an interview yet, hamster?

safetypin and neurohopes:
Im wondering what to wear. The letter says dress is casual. does it mean business casual?

@talisshort
I think the confusion is that Tufts Sackler School’s application was due December 15, but Tufts Biology department is due on January 15th

It means what it says (i.e., “casual”). It doesn’t mean something it doesn’t say (i.e., “business casual”).

I’d be careful with how you think about “casual.” True, it doesn’t say business casual. And yes, some professors wear jeans and t-shirts around. But I certainly wouldn’t advise showing up to an interview like that. If you were a nice shirt, slacks and a tie, and it makes you uncomfortable at an event, take the tie off and put it in your pocket.

Think of it this way. You’re going to make your first in-person impression on these people, who are professionals. Dress accordingly. I can’t imagine any judgements will be passed on the quality of your clothes, but I have almost no doubt that it will be passed on the effort you take to appear professional at certain events.

As long as you forgo a suit and tie, you’re generally in territory that overlaps with “casual.”

“A nice shirt and slacks” is therefore well within the realm of “casual” (and its subset, “business casual”).

That being said, since they explicitly stated “casual” as appropriate, there is no reason neat, untattered jeans and a conservative, snarky comment-less t-shirt would not be tolerated.

hey wasabi2u
I applied to 10 schools: USCF, yale, columbia, unc, nyu, mt sinai, urochester, umass, cornell, suny buffalo. all pharmacology except UCSF (BMS).

i got interviews at ucsf, unc, yale, columbia, mt sinai and cornell (i dropped my application here) . they sent me the invites on december.
i think my application at nyu and umass were rejected since i didnt hear from any of these schools

what schools did u apply to and which interviews do u have at this time?

yes, my MIT interview is brain and cognitive. march 5-7.

It can be, yes. I guess my point is that interpretation of terms like “casual” and “business-casual” can vary a good bit from person to person and place to place. The tricky part is that casual also overlaps with inappropriate for some situations, just be careful to avoid that.

(all neuro) NYU, Georgetown, Stanford, UPenn, U Chicago (okay, psych-int. neuro), Duke, U Mich.

Thanks for any help.

Got invite from UWisc-Madison CMB today. Apparently they have several rounds of interview invitations. I’m international.

What I got so far:
Columbia (Gen&Dev): Jan 28-31
Baylor (DevBio): Feb 10-14
UW-Madison (CMB): Feb 18-21

I’m still waiting for 10 other schools though.

Hey Hamster,
Haha, now you’re starting to make me nervous. I’ve applied to Yale, Mich, NYU, JHU, UNC, Duke, and WISC’s Pharm related schools (or relative umbrella programs). So far I have an interview with Mich. I’m not expecting any notice from Wisc or JHU until the end of January (Their application deadlines Dec 31 and Jan 10 respectively). However, Yale, NYU, and the NC schools I was under the impression they’d start asking next week if at all.

Received an interview offer by phone from UCSF Tetrad.
