So it begins, Congrats!

i’m really hoping i hear back from a program by the end of the month…that would be quite the christmas present…

yaygrady when did you turn in your application?

yay yaygrady! congrats! … did they contact you by email? I applied to Baylor’s pharmacology program and I’m just curious

Thanks guys! Yes, I got the reply by email…and I applied sometime in Sept-Oct. GL all!

oh *****, one person hears back from one school, so we can all officially start freaking out and expecting results now…no wait, what if I check now…still nothing. OK, NOW!

i havent heard back either :(

it’s been 4 minutes already since i submitted!!

on a serious note, good luck to all

Hi! I’m an international student (Europe) and I’ve applied to the Neuroscience program at Harvard. Could anyone please tell me if international students are tipically called for a telephone interview or are they just invited to the interview weekend like the US students?
It’s not at all easy to get a US visa in such a short notice, and a trip to the US for an interview would be quite a financial burden (especially if you don’t get accepted in the end anyway). Any comments?

Harvard doesn’t interview.

Are you sure? It’s mentioned on their application web-page, and I’ve read something about it on a previous post (last years’ thread - where you also posted some comments, ‘Mom’) - have I misunderstood?

I’m talking about the interdisciplinary ‘Program in Neuroscience’ at Harvard Med.School, within DMS.

Hmmm. I thought neuroscience was part of Harvard’s BBS, which doesn’t interview. Maybe international students have phone interviews? Molliebatmit is currently in Harvard’s BBS program and has said several times that they do not interview. They do have a recruitment weekend for all accepted students, however. Is that what you saw? If so, you probably don’t have to attend that since you would already be accepted if invited.

No, that would be neurobiology, but the program I applied to is an integrative program in Neuroscience, not within BBS, and they mention an interview weekend for potential applicants. I hope they interview international students via phone… it would be pretty complicated and expensive otherwise…

I assume schools in the US don’t cover the interview travel expenses of their applicants? Am I correct?

They cover the expenses for students already in the States, but I don’t know what they do for internationals.

I didn’t know Harvard has an integrative program in neuroscience. I’ll bet my daughter missed that one when she was researching programs.

Really, they do? They refund the travel expenses for US students? Is that a rule? For every school? How does that work?
Well, if they do that for prospective US candidates, there is a chance they could be doing it for international ones as well. Can you tell me how about how it works for US residents?

I didn’t apply to Harvard, but every neuro program I’m applying to pays for travel expenses, housing, and food to come to interview weekends (for US applicants). A lot of people couldn’t afford to go if they didn’t. At any rate, the interview weekend is mostly a “recruiting” weekend, so they want the opportunity to show off the goods and woo you into grad slavery. From what I’ve read here and on thegradcafe int’l students do get phone interviews from some schools. You’re better off asking the particular program whether they interview…or just wait for contact.

Yes, the Program in Neuroscience interviews (it’s within the same division as BBS, but is a separate PhD program with its own admissions and classes). They reimburse applicants for interview expenses, just as virtually every other PhD program does. I don’t know their policy on inviting students from outside the US to the interview weekend – I can ask around this week, as some of the students in my lab are PIN.

Typically, applicants buy their own plane tickets and get transportation to and from the interview up front, then they are reimbursed after the fact by the university. In most cases, the university will pay for hotel expenses themselves (generally all recruits will be staying in a room block), and most food expenses will also be paid for by the programs at the time of the interview (because you’ll all be eating together). For a few schools, I was asked to book my flights through the school’s travel agent, and the school paid for the tickets.

Schools reimburse everyone for their travel expenses, so if they do not want to pay the increased cost for international students, they’ll offer phone interviews to internationals. They won’t invite anyone to interview without paying for them.

And as far as I know, schools will take care of getting visas for visiting international students.

Great, thank you very much for the information!

Received an invitation (2 days ago by email) to interview at Baylor College of Medicine, Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology!!! First interview weekend is Feb. 4-7, 2010!!! I am so excited that I nearly fell in the floor!! Feels so great to get the first response!!!
