2010 Official Biosciences Interviews and Results

I see that Stanford has started sending out interview invitations for some of its programs. Does anyone have a timeline on the Cancer Biology Program decisions?

Thanks!

Just for the records, I also got an email invitation to Stanford (Biology home program), as an international (European) applicant.

As this is my first interview invitation, I am obviously extremely relieved. And I have to pose a possibly stupid question, but a tourist visa should be sufficient for the interview visit, right? Or do I have to apply for a specific visa?

@jixani

Congratulation for the Stanford interview! Which other programs did you select?

I am also an European applicant so I can help you with the visa question. You will not need a visa if you are a citizen of a country that participates in the visa waiver program ([Visa Waiver Program (VWP)](<a href=“404 - Page Not Found”>404 - Page Not Found)), but you just need an electronic passport. It will be safer (though not necessary) to have also a formal invite from Stanford to show to the customs officer.

@miRNAgirl: Thank you for the link to the Visa Waiver Program! This is indeed very helpful, and relieving, that, for once, there do not seem to be any annoying bureaucratic hurdles.

As some of the programs I applied to are very specific, I’d rather not publicly post the programs I applied to. Yes I am paranoid, but the internet never forgets, and better being save than sorry. I sent you a pm with the programs though, and in case anybody else is interested, I gladly provide this information.

I don’t think UCSF ever intended for that to show admission results. “Under Review” is probably the final status.

So do you think UCSF Tetrad is done sending out interview invites?

@regarzy

I also applied to pathology/pathobiology programs! I applied to UWashington-Seattle (pathobiology) and John’s Hopkins (pathobiology) as well as some smaller schools. I haven’t heard anything from any schools yet…

Totally depends on your preferences. I never actually stayed with a graduate student during interviews – I was local for the Boston schools, so I wasn’t offered the choice. (I thought they should have paid for my dorm room for a few nights, but apparently that wasn’t on the table.)

No, although I would assume several hundred.

The year I applied, I was notified on Jan 26. I would expect acceptances to go out the last week of January, though this is not based on any inside info.

What do you mean by key faculty?

BBS is definitely a big program, and there are lots of PIs compared to graduate students, so it’s a bit of a buyer’s market. Many PIs participate in orientation and the first-year reading course to attract students to their labs – there isn’t much competition to get into particular labs, except maybe for one or two smoking hot stem cell labs.

My year harvard BBS sent out acceptances in waves (or at least I was in the second wave). Several people at my undergrad heard around the jan. 26 that mollie said, I heard the first or second week in feb. I was interviewing at UW at the time and wasn’t thrilled when someone called me at 8am EST to let me know I had been accepted.

I also didn’t stay with any grad students while interviewing-- I didn;t go to the Harvard BBS weekend bc I had already been accepted into another HILS program. At MIT I opted to stay in a hotel, which worked out well for me because that was one of my later interviews and by that point I was exhausted. It was nice to have some space to decompress in at the end of the day-- I also went back to the hotel and took a short nap during one of my breaks.

@miRNAgirl and @jixani

hi, i’m also an international. you should check the esta (<a href=“Official ESTA Application Website, U.S. Customs and Border Protection”>Official ESTA Application Website, U.S. Customs and Border Protection) as well, since citizens from VWP countries are now required to do this additional step before flying. (i don’t remember having to do it before)

I have a question regarding interviews. For UPenn CAMB, I have my interview this coming weekend–but they haven’t given me any faculty list yet (they will give me when I arrive there)–how am I supposed to research their interests and come up with questions for them beforehand? Are the interviews grilling? I am getting really anxious and this is my first interview experience. Hope I don’t screw it up!

For the attire–they mentioned on their website to dress professionally–should I just wear a business suit to be on the safe side or would that be too much? Should I dress business casual instead!

Thanks a lot guys…and congrats and good luck to everyone on your interviews!

yaygrady:

Business suit is way too much, so I would opt for a nice shirt and slacks (or sweater and slacks). You will definitely stick out in a suit.

for those asking earlier, I just got a call from U penn neuro, so looks like they’re not done.

Stanford biosciences (biochem) invite :slight_smile:

received a call yesterday

@Yaygrady

I’m also interviewing for CAMB this weekend. I guess we will have to do some late night cramming to prepare for the interviews, but I don’t think you need to prepare that much. Just take a few notes about the lab interests, skim through some recent papers. It says on the website that last year they interviewed 120 and accepted 111, so I wouldn’t be to concerned, just don’t say anything really stupid.

I asked a grad student about the professional dress and she said if you feel comfortable in a suit then go for it, but nice pants and a button-up with a sports jacket will also be fine. It seems like if they are asking for more formal dress (professional) as opposed to other schools (casual or business casual). I think i’m gunna wear a suit, but I might bring some back up clothes.

Good luck and see you there

Does anyone know if each of the Stanford Biosciences Home Programs sends out invites at the same time? I’m waiting for the Developmental Biology one…

Has anyone heard from Berkeley MCB recently? I know some of you heard before the holidays, and they should be on to the other half of applicants soon…

Hi kwhitman, I think that the home programs at Stanford send invitations separately. Seems that the neuro folks have heard from their applied program earlier. Some folks here have just heard from biology and biochem.

By the way, does someone usually call to notify an interview opportunity? My cell phone is usually off during day time. I’m curious if staff from Stanford will email or mail folks with details.

@squarci,

I don’t really know, but I have a feeling the first round of them are out; the invite postings started showing up last Thursday.

@miRNAman – thanks for the info! I am also bringing back up clothes just in case. I just got the email with the list of faculty I will be meeting with. So atleast we have some days to prepare!

Good luck to you too and see you there!
