2010 Official Biosciences Interviews and Results

Yaygrady-
Congrats on the Baylor interview as well! We each deserve a pat on the back for our accomplishment! I am interviewing the same weekend for the same program, MCB!!! So, we will be meeting there! I am also very excited, nervous, and a whole range of emotions! Have you decided which faculty members you are interested in meeting with?

just got an email from Baylor’s pharmacology saying they’ve reviewed my application, happy that I applied and what not, and that I’m a stong applicant. They said invites for interviews will be sent out in January 2010 for the Feb interview weekend. I’m guessing because some of you got invites already it really just depends on the department? haha i hope…

Pharmagrl-
I second your thought…I do think that the timing of invites varies based on individual departments within an institution, and it is difficult to predict when or how an invitation for an interview will come.

@ RIO,

I also applied early to Duke and hadn’t heard anything for the longest time as to whether my application was complete. So I emailed the administrator in charge of my department just to make sure everything had arrived. He contacted admissions for me and then I received an email regarding my application materials. So that might be worth a try.

for those of you who got the request for faculty @ WUStL:

Did you put the faculty names that you would like to work with on the last page of your online application form?

I received an email asking whether the language of instruction at my university is English so that I’m exempted from TOEFL (I’m international student) although my official transcript states clearly that it is.

So I suspect that they haven’t look carefully into your application/SOP yet, so although some of you already put the faculty names in your SOP but not in your application form, they will still contact you to make sure that everything is in before the admissions committee starts reviewing.

Therefore, not receiving any email simply means you already have everything in?

^^ngcongtri, “Did you put the faculty names that you would like to work with on the last page of your online application form?”

Yes I did. I mentioned the names of the PIs in both application form and SOP. I still got an email asking me to mention the name of 10 faculties whom I want to talk with during interview.

@cytometry-congrats to you too! I am feeling anxious as well. I haven’t decided on the faculty yet. They said you have until January to decide.

@lassathrax-UVA also had my transcripts missing, funny because I resend them twice and the status is still not updated! guess they are taking their time updating the information.

Did that section even exist? I just knew they asked about faculty members (if any) with whom I have consulted or corresponded regarding admission. I didnt fill that out since I didnt contact any faculty members.

selpunca is right. the list on the application was for faculty members consulted. i think we should all just take this email as a good sign and hope for the best.

Hi,RIO2016,

What I mean by “lack of experience” is that we lack of EXCELLENT research experience, such as 1st author high-profile publication. We don’t usually have such chances as an undergraduate.

Well, I think I’ve already explained very clearly that the WUSTL faculty request is an indication that you’ve already passed the first round review, so it’s a good sign; but it’s not that good because it doesn’t guarantee an interview…

For those of you who applied to UCSF BMS program, I heard from someone there that they received 500+ applications(usually receive ~300) and will be interviewing approximately 80 people this year

I just got a call from UCSD BMS! Interview invite for either the February 19-20th and March 5-6th. I’m shocked right now, this is great. I was complete in early November for those of you who are wondering.

nutmeg1284: Do you know anything about the UCSF TETRAD interviews?

Hey congrats, GCN2.

Congrats GCN2!

i just got an update on my sloan kettering application with recommended interviewers today…some of them weren’t even on my list of preferable interviewers, and it seems all the recommendations do research that’s directly related to my current undergraduate thesis project…did anyone else notice something like this?

I don’t know about the latter, but in most graduate school interviews, only a small fraction of your interviewers will come from your preferred list, a result of any number of variables, such as availability, etc.

yup, some of my interviewers are not on my preferable list. i now have two reviewers on my list. i wonder if this means that these two faculty members have given me favorable reviews and therefore have provided interviewer recommendations…

yeah, i’m wondering if this is a good sign or just something that happens to every application…oh well, wait and see i guess!
