2010 Smithies!!

I tried for Green Street as well. I can't wait until we get our assignments :)

How much of a turnaround time was there between sending in the desposit and getting the rooming stuff? I waited til the last minute (typically) and haven't gotten anything yet. I think I'm going to try for Green St. and then Elm, though.

Our D received a packet (the first of many, I understand) about two weeks ago. It includes health forms and housing as well. However, you can do your housing form on Bannerweb (better and faster than snailmail.)

Thanks BJM8, I'd forgotten about BannerWeb!

My daughter would like to get a Smith Facebook ... anybody know how to sign up?

You can't sign up for Facebook as a Smith student until you have a Smith email address. Smith sets up the email and sends incoming students information about accessing it in late June/early July.

Your email addy-- 1sr yrs. don't have a Smith ID yet-- will get you 10% off at Apple (Mac) stores on any purchase.

We could start a Mac vs.PC thread :)

Umm, why bother? Since Macs are clearly superior and all the cool kids at Smith either have one or want one. Also, definitley take advantage of the student discounts and the deals at the mac education store. www.apple.com/education

That settles that. lol I wish everything was so easy.

hm, so can someone debreif me about Smith's giving out computer thing??? what kinds of comps are we allowed to have? good quality? recommendations? what's the price range? and when do we get our e-mail addresses?

Gcheng, go to the Smith website and then to their tech area:

http://www.smith.edu/its/computerstore/

My D had many of the same questions, and when we looked at either purchasing ourselves or through Smith, the choice was clear. You certainly can buy a computer cheaper from an outside vendor. However, when you purchase a computer from Smith it comes with a four year guarantee and IT will fix it for you regardless of what happens. That's priceless! So anyway, that's what we decided to do. As far as the email address, I have no clue.

You can buy macs and pc's through the computer store (and yeah, the IT service that was mentioned earlier is worthwhile). I would reccommend getting a Mac (a little biased here), they're a bit more expensive, but there are very very few viruses and spyware made for Macs. Also, PCs have to have Clean Access (a Smith mandated virus protection that you download), which slows down your startup and internet start time. Macs don't have to have that, which just makes things a little easier.

Also, I would reccommend to all you soon to be first years to look into getting a printer. You can of course print stuff at the libraries or computer labs (five cents a page), but having a printer in your room can make your world run a lot more smoothly (not to mention you save money). I spent one semester of my first year without a printer, and then picked one up on the Daily Jolt for second semester, and my life got a lot simpler. just a suggestion.

Great suggestion, thanks. We were planning on getting a printer for our D's room already, as having to pay 5 cents per copy would drive me nuts!

You won't regret it. I have one of those HP 3-in-1 Printer, Copier Scanner things, if you want a suggestion. It's inexpensive and very useful.

I bought a Compaq laptop for college last year because it was the cheapest one I could find. If only I knew then what I know now...

Anyway, I'm currently saving up for an Apple laptop for this fall. If I had gotten one last year I would've saved myself a lot of headaches. But I've learned my lesson at least!

More votes for having a printer (D has an inexpensive color inkjet) and a Mac laptop...D purchased both through Smith because of the support options and hasn't regretted it. Saved her virtual life a couple of times, in fact.

TD's correct. Spend the extra by going through Smith. They used to support any students puter but not anymore. As his daughter learned, having tech support can be invaluable.
I’m surprised a Mac needed support though.

For those of you bringing or buying a non Smith puter, you'll need to read this.

I have a computer question for the knowledgeable folk out there -

I will be buying a laptop from Smith when I arrive - my very first computer! I am interested in getting a Mac, but I haven't used one since the mid 90s, so I pretty much know nothing about them anymore. Is getting acclimated to a brand new computer system during the start of term/orientation a bad idea? How difficult is the adjustment from PC to Mac?

stolenshovel,
If you're generally pretty good at using a computer, you shouldn't have a problem. I have a pc desktop at home and a pc laptop, but find it very easy to use my the my friends' apples. I had a mac when I was younger, and even though it had been a while I still find them fairly easy to use. It's little things you have to get used to, like File>Quit instead of clicking on the X to close a program.

Macs are, in my opinion, the most user friendly computers out there. The mac from the 90s and the macs of today are vastly different machines in that way: the new ones are so easy! They are built to be out of the box computers for people who don't want a lot of setup or programming fuss. Smith will answer your questions for you (ITS is pretty good about getting back to you about stuff), so will any of the many, many mac users in your house.
