2010 UC Berkeley Transfer Student: Ask me!

@ Willabee did you intend on double majoring when you applied? Either way, did you have the do any pre-reqs for sociology? If I get into Cal I may want to double in English but I’m missing some pre-reqs. Thanks!

@ OP - Calm down, its UC Berkeley, not Harvard, or MIT, or Stanford, not an actual prestigious university.

^what?^

AND THE WINNER FOR MOST ASININE POST FOR THE 2011 APPLICATION SEASON GOES TO…

^that idiot^

@ Billionaire: lol, nice. Although, you wouldn’t believe the hysterical ■■■■■■ that frequented the board last application season…then again, I feel like I remember your sn from back then, so maybe you would remember them? haha.

@bettertomorrow

Thanks for the insight!

my summer schedule is as follows:
summer following hs: 8 quarter units
summer between ccc: 8 units
summer following ccc: 0 untits
this next summer i don’t plan on taking any courses at berkeley however may entertain myself with some courses back at de anza for personal interests and an internship/job. i would suggest those debating what to do with summer to obtain an internship, job, etc. for experience as it’ll contribute to the majority of content on your resume where as education will only highlight a couple lines. the exception, of course, is if you have to finish credits or whatever else to obtain a transfer (probably your objective if you’re reading this). otherwise, yeah

1st and i’m down. i’ll shoot you a pm following this

no, i did not intend to double major until i got here. i figure if i’m going to be required to take other upper divisions, and already have a deep interest in sociology, i might as well by doing a bit more work. i already took sociology for kicks at ccc and another prereq here to satisfy part of my econ prereq and the third and last prereq will probably be taken either at ccc during summer or my spare time here at berkeley.
look into taking advantage of completing as many prereqs in ccc as possible for financial and competitive reasons. you’ll find it so much easier and cheaper than taking them here. plus, it’s extremely time consuming to take a prereq here for a 16 week semester when you can do it during summer for an 8 week quarter. you’ll want to spend your time at the university focusing on upper divisions and not chillyn with a bunch of freshies. however, i am not discouraging the idea of taking prereqs here as that is more than fine. just sayin, doin them at a ccc will just be that much easier for you in the long

@ meteman
intriguing. let me know where i acted outside the realm of ‘calm’ and i’ll try my best to contain myself

major- psychology
gpa- 3.93
igetc- will be done by spirng
pre-req will be done by spring
ec- part time work( 15hrs per week)
dean’s honor student??? (I received award)
I have one B on berkeley pre-req.
Does lack of EC’s really affect me? tot

■■■■■ @ dude saying berkeley isn’t prestigious.
■■■■■ @ people getting rejected with 3.9 GPA’s at Berkeley.

My friend got rejected with a 4.0 but he was a polisci major. So it COULD happen(UC statfinder says 5-7%?) even though I don’t understand how it can. I still wonder why they rejected him…

I dated a girl that got rejected from UCLA as a Political Science major with a 3.9. Subsequently, she was accepted at Cal. She posited that she was denied admission into UCLA because her education plan was Cal’s College of Letter and Sciences. I’m not sure what that means.

@eyethink
eyethink it means she didn’t complete the prereqs for UCLA. diff schools have diff prereqs

@iZychr,

By academic plan I meant GE/breadth requirements. Not major prerequisites. But it is entirely possible she didn’t complete UCLA’s Political Science prerequisites either.

@eyethink
the GE thing should be true, like if she didn’t do IGETC.

@iZychr,

She in fact did not do IGETC.

Oh. My friend did IGETC but got rejected at Cal, but accepted at UCLA.

so do you think your personal statements had an impact on you getting into CAL? I am a bit unsure of what to put on the personal statement. like what sort of experience or quality should i include.

@ ndalbc
certainly. i think the statistic was something, generally, along the lines of 60% gpa and 40% personal statement (holding all other variables constant). i really don’t know how i could help besides asking yourself how the statement can help express yourself and your character: what do you want the schools to see about you (along the lines of the statement). not sure how helpful that is… what’re the statements this time around anyways?

I’m not planning to transfer until Fall 2012 but I have my eyes set on either UCB or UCLA and planning to major in linguistics. The thought of transferring to either makes me excited. I hope I’ll be able to do it. What’s the atmosphere like at UCB anyways? Is everyone really intellectual? I can just imagine everyone being really smart and conversing about math… or physics as a conversational currency. Hehehe.

Hey Will, could you share some of the experiences you’ve had with the administration there?

@ iMunster
i think it’s good you’re looking ahead and being very ecstatic about your road to those schools. i’m not one to generalize but i think the atmosphere, geography, demography and a million other things help shape conversational topics mainly towards academics (as opposed to sports, other extra curricular, etc.). i’ve found everyone here to be intelligent in their own way and hard working but they’re not all einstein’s walking around choppin it up about quantum physics… haha

@ jusray91
hm, what would you like to know more specifically?
