Couldn’t find one for Berkeley so here it is! Feel free to post any question/comments about the transfer path to Cal!
Good luck everyone!
Good luck to everyone!
Hi all,
Just wondering my chances… I am a Political Science CCC transfer.
-4.0 GPA, 53 community college units completed + 16 AP credits from high school
-All prerequisites completed that my school offered (I couldn’t take two courses because they didn’t articulate)
-IGETC certified
-Took a semester off to intern in the Capitol in Washington, DC
-President of two campus clubs
Do I have any reason to be nervous? Also, best of luck to everyone else!
@hubbahub you really shouldn’t have any reason to be nervous other than your essays. If you feel your essays are up to par, you should be fine. Also, have you checked for any community colleges within 10 miles of you that do offer the prerequisites?
@spenceyboi one college that was about a 30 minute drive offered the classes, but I didn’t do it because I couldn’t afford driving an hour every day to go to class. My essays felt pretty solid, too. I was just a little nervous because of the 53 units, but because I have the 16 units from high school courses I was told by the admissions office I should be fine. I’ve heard horror stories of students with 4.0 GPAs getting rejected, so I am just suffering from anxiety I suppose. :-S
The 4.0 getting rejected is not because of chance, but really because they likely missed something important. Your ECs sound great, 53 units will be boosted up from this semester I presume, and your essays are fine according to you. You did talk about why you took time off due to your internship correct?
And 30 minutes away isn’t within the commute range I believe so you’re good.
@spenceyboi 53 units is the final amount, but it is a total of 69 when factoring in my AP/IB exam units from high school. I will not be getting any additional units from my community college because I’m currently working in DC on the hill and this semester is the one I took off. I am IGETC certified, satisfied my prerequisites as indicated by assist.org, and decided to take advantage of the opportunity and left to work in Washington. I did explain the internship in DC in the application as well.
Your 16 units from AP classes are accompanied by AP test scores too right?
Yes, I received a 4 in AP Euro (5.3 Berkeley units awarded), 3 in AP Calc AB (2.7 units) , 4 in AP Gov (2.7 units), and a 7 in IB English HL (5.3 units)–amounting to a total of 16 UC units. They’re decimals because I divided their quarter-unit values (retrieved from http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/exam-credit/ap-credits/index.html) by 1.5.
We are in the same boat so I don’t think it’s anything to worry about. By the end of spring I will have 55 CC units plus AP credits (4 on English Lit, 3 on Euro, 3 on Human Geo) giving me an additional 13.3 semester units (20/1.5). I also used the 4 on English Lit to bypass English 101 at my CC.
I guess I’ll get my stats in here anyways to let people judge me too. Please feel free to make a guess at whether or not I’ll get in!
I’m in my second year at a California Community College. I’m hoping to transfer to Haas this fall as a Business Administration major.
Here goes:
Classes I have taken where I have either received an A or A+:
Calc 1, Calc 2, Calc 3*
Stat 10*
Eng 1, Eng 2, Eng 3*
Macroeconomics, Microeconomics
Principles of Business*
Music Theory
Introduction to the Global Economy
Ethics
Cultural Anthropology
Basic Nutrition Sports
Intro to Abnormal Psychology
Environmental Science
Classes I have taken where I received an A-:
General Physics
*prerequisites
My cumulative GPA including my Fall quarter grades is 3.982. I am completely done with all prerequisites and breadth recommendations for graduation from UC Berkeley. I have completed 84 units since the Fall quarter and will take 39 more units during the next two quarters for a total of 123 quarter units when I transfer not including APs.
EC:
Worked as the marketing lead for a multi-million dollar online ecommerce company until I left due to conflict schedules with my classes.
Creator and and president of an investing club. Not a club based within the college, but a club of people who pooled our money together to invest. We ended up beating the S&P 500 over the course of an year. I actually really want to bring this club to Haas and to invest with other Haas students using my techniques.
Volunteered on a House of Representatives member’s finance team during his 2014 reelection campaign.
Play the cello competitively.
The personal tutor of a 13 year old girl.
Have over 300 community service hours (100 in the past year).
Essay 1 (what is your major): I just basically talked about how I have failed a few times before in the business world. From failing my first garage sale to not doing so well as a marketing director, I realized that every time I failed, I learned something to bring forward for my future endeavors in the future. This ability to learn from my failures made me want to continue pursuing the business world and as such, a business administration major.
Essay 2 (what is an accomplishment you are proud of): I spoke on creating the investing club with my main goal of making money. The club did end up making money, but what I was truly proud of was being able to bring the team together and actually work together for a profit. Becoming a respected and effective leader was the accomplishment, not the money.
Essay 3 (Haas specific) had a fairly personal quote so I would rather not post it publicly.
Anyways, have at it guys!
Does anyone know if letters and science sometimes gives spring admits? Or is that only for other colleges at Cal. Just curious
I believe L&S does have spring admits
@luckie1367 is right.
Hey everyone! I know we are still pretty far out from decision day, but I’m already feeling so anxious. I’m a history major and Cal would be a dream. I have been reading the fall 2014 forum and it seems like there is no predictability in the admissions. Speaking of last years forum, I’m glad to see @Cayton in this years forum! Let’s get this one going like last years
I think it’s a good idea for everyone to start using this thread @Sweep1989. Last year I found that talking to other transfer candidates on these threads was one of the best ways to lessen anxiety from upcoming decisions. It helps to talk to other people who are in the same boat as you, and makes the process a little easier. For some reason though the Berkeley thread seems to stay quiet until decisions get really close.
I predict a quick uptick in April.
@Sweep1989 I feel you, man. One month and 20 days left, but who’s counting lol
I’m getting even more anxious with the whole Napolitano/Brown thing going on.
I feel ya, I have no clue how to pay for this. I know loans are an option, and I have savings and I’m working, but it seems like a huge amount of money!!
